Position: Special Education Teacher (Intervention)

Overview

The Special Education Teacher (Intervention) role is to coordinate and provide developmentally appropriate educational services for students with diverse abilities. Responsibilities include adapting programming to address cognitive, physical, social-emotional, behavioral, and communication needs of students with identified disabilities, maintaining required documents, and ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations.

Responsibilities
  • Assume responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the classroom, including general education collaboration when applicable.
  • Provide direct instruction in the classroom, small groups, and/or 1:1 settings.
  • Develop and maintain student IEPs in the Educational Management System and conduct parent meetings to report progress toward IEP goals.
  • Cooperatively design and implement IEPs focused on improving skill deficits.
  • Plan curriculum and prepare lessons and materials considering individual needs, abilities, and learning levels.
  • Employ special education strategies to develop sensory, perceptual-motor skills, language, cognition, or memory.
  • Utilize and follow de-escalation and restraint strategies when appropriate and required.
  • Utilize active teaching strategies incorporating cooperative learning and technology.
  • Use formative and summative assessments and progress monitoring data to drive instruction.
  • Foster cooperative social behavior and group projects to support relationships with peers and adults.
  • Collaborate with school staff to determine accommodations, modifications, and assessment of curriculum and instruction for students.
  • Model instructional strategies for students with academic, behavioral, and social challenges.
  • Maintain developmentally appropriate student management techniques across settings.
  • Communicate with students, parents, and administration about progress and needed corrective actions.
  • Accurately prepare and maintain reports/data required by IDEA and Board of Education.
  • Administer diagnostic tests and monitor student progress regularly.
  • Seek services through community resources to meet needs of exceptional students.
  • Prepare written materials (grades, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.).
  • Advise parents/guardians of student progress.
  • Direct student teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers, and/or student workers.
  • Maintain a high level of personal integrity and a strong work ethic.
  • Attend regularly and participate in meetings and trainings.
  • Follow safety rules and procedures; collaborate with staff, parents, and community resources to benefit students.
  • Adhere to board policies and school system rules; comply with the Employee Code of Conduct.
  • Report suspected child abuse or unlawful conduct to the appropriate agencies and administrators as required by law.
  • Respond to inquiries from teachers, students, parents, administrators, and others; address emergency situations appropriately.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Valid teaching license with appropriate endorsement acceptable to the state of Tennessee;
    First Aid and CPR certification preferred; must have or be willing to obtain Conflict Resolution/Restraint Training.
  • Maintain state license requirements and participate in ongoing professional development related to RTI2A & B, special education referrals and eligibility, assessment protocols and procedures.
  • Pre-employment Physical Exam.
