Job OverviewSpecial Education Instructional Assistant works under the supervision of a licensed teacher to support students with IEPs in general and special education classrooms. Responsibilities include classroom support, intervention delivery, data collection, meal and playground supervision, and additional duties as assigned.
Key Responsibilities- Adapts classroom activities and materials under teacher direction.
- Administers classroom assignments, tests, homework, and make‑up work.
- Provides first aid and medical assistance as instructed.
- Assists with record keeping and material preparation.
- Supports students individually or in small groups to practice and reinforce learning concepts and reach IEP goals.
- Maintains a safe and orderly learning environment.
- Collaborates with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents, and community resources.
- Communicates progress to teachers and others as needed.
- Provides direct academic and social skills instruction or support.
- Employs de‑escalation/restraint strategies and is required to have restraint training and certification.
- Supports implementation of IEPs, behavioral interventions, classroom management and discipline plans.
- Maintains confidentiality of all records per legal and system guidelines.
- Monitors students in classroom, playground, lunchroom, library, cafeteria, bus loading/unloading, and field trips.
- Responds to emergencies, safety concerns, and incidents per law and school policy.
- Participates in required professional development, e.g., child development, early childhood education, health/safety, de‑escalation, CPR.
- Performs other assigned duties as needed.
- Must have two years of college credit (48 semester hours), an Associate’s Degree, or a passing score on the Para‑Pro exam.
- Willingness or ability to obtain First Aid and CPR certification.
- Prior experience supporting students with special needs is highly desired.
- Strong communication, organizational, and teamwork skills.
- Acceptance of restraint training and certification if required.
- Proficiency in maintaining safety and confidentiality of student information.
Targeted education:
Two years of college credit or equivalent. Associate’s Degree or pass on Para‑Pro exam.
Certificates & Licenses:
First Aid and CPR (required). Restraint training (required).

- Heavy lifting up to 60 lbs.
- Occasional over 15% to 40% of the time in heavy lifting.
- Pushing, pulling, climbing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, talking, hearing, seeing.
- Assisting students with physical needs.
The job requires frequent movement and providing support in various settings including classroom, playground, lunchroom, library, cafeteria, and bus.
Temperament and Personal Traits- Adaptability to varying duties and changing tasks.
- Ability to assume responsibility for planning and controlling activities.
- Capability to work with students, faculty, administration, and CO staff.
- Skill in making generalizations, evaluations, or decisions based on sensory or judgmental criteria.
