Medical Instrument Technician (Diagnostic Ultrasound)
Summary:
The Medical Instrument Technician will perform duties to include general and vascular ultrasound examinations and assist the Radiologist in ultrasound guided interventional procedures in the Radiology at the James H. Quillen VAMC Mountain Home - TN.

No specific educational requirements for this occupation - Licensure or Certification:
Not required but strongly desirable (e.g., CCI or ARDMS) - English Language Proficiency:
Proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) - Experience:
At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-8) directly related to duties; demonstrate KSAs at that level such as cross-sectional and longitudinal vascular anatomy, Doppler information, etc. - Preferred Experience:
Performing general and vascular ultrasound duties - Certifications:
Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) desirable
- Operate ultrasonic equipment efficiently and effectively to produce diagnostic imaging of anatomy
- Make multiple simultaneous settings and adjustments in operation of equipment to insure accurate results
- Determine necessary ultrasound procedures based on clinic findings to yield definitive diagnostic findings
- Assist radiologists or referring physicians of significant abnormalities requiring immediate attention while the patient is undergoing examination
- Perform vascular ultrasound and Doppler examinations of the neck, chest, and extremities to acquire high-quality examinations for diagnosis and treatment of medical disorders
- Perform general ultrasound examinations of the abdomen, breast, testicles, pelvic, neck, chest, extremities, and retroperitoneal space
- Participate in training of physicians, students, and radiology technologists on ultrasound principles
- Maintain accurate records and register patients in the Radiology Information System (RIS)
- Review new developments in the field and recommend improvements to the supervisor
- Coordinate with ordering physician to resolve any issues with incorrectly ordered exams
- Maintain adequate supplies to avoid delays due to lack of equipment or supplies
- Perform administrative duties such as clerical tasks, data entry, and order reviews
- Assist in surgical procedures and fluid aspirations as needed
- Assist radiologists with biopsy procedures determining location, depth, and required needle angle
- Contribute to performance improvement projects and writing policies, procedures, and protocols pertaining to vascular ultrasonography
- Maintain physical fitness capable of heavy lifting of 45 pounds or more and related tasks such as carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching, and walking
- Ensure visual acuity correctable to specified standards
- Be eligible for the full performance level of this vacancy (GS-8), actual grade may be GS-9
$64,468.00/yr - $83,806.00/yr (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs provided pay range; actual pay based on skills and experience).
