Base Pay Range: $47,429.00/yr – $61,655.00/yr
SummaryBusiness Office program area. The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) provides specialized and expert administrative patient support while working collaboratively in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model. There are various specialty sections within the Business Office program areas.
QualificationsApplicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
- United States Citizenship:
Non-citizens may be appointed only when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. - Experience and
Education:- Six months experience of clerical‑office or other work indicating the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed.
- One year above high school education.
- Equivalent combination of experience and education qualifies entry‑level.
- English Language Proficiency:
Must be proficient in spoken and written English per VA Handbook 5005. - May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision for current VHA employees.
- Grade Determinations:
For GS‑6, at least one year of experience at or equivalent to GS‑5. - Duties at this level include performing a full range of duties related to delivery of healthcare services in inpatient or outpatient settings: answering phones, greeting patients, relaying messages to appropriate staff, scheduling appointments, interpreting and verifying provider orders, and demonstrating knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Advanced knowledge of technical healthcare processes, policies and procedures associated with interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery, patient flow, and administrative functions.
- Advanced understanding of medical terminology and technology.
- Works collaboratively in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery environment.
- Coordinates patient care team to review clinic utilization using various reports.
- Ensures clinic setup is monitored and adjusted as needed.
- Maintains effective communication with patient interdisciplinary team, management, VA medical centers, and other agencies.
- Collects, scans, and updates health insurance information; promotes veteran registration and utilization of My Healthy Vet.
- Trains other MSAs and serves as a preceptor.
- Schedules appointments.
- Notifies supervisor when clinic access is less than desirable or if patient cannot be scheduled within mandated time frames.
- Daily review of active/pending consults, encounters, electronic wait lists, recall lists, and MHV secure messaging for accuracy.
- Reports backlogs, difficulties, and schedules based on personal knowledge of clinic operations and policy.
- The position remains open until September 29, 2026; initial referral cut‑off October 18, 2025.
