• Performs entry-level semi-skilled work operating a transit vehicle, collecting fares, and overseeing the safety of passengers; does related work as required.

• An employee in this class operates a city passenger bus following a specific schedule and route as a relief or temporary driver.
• An employee in this class is under the direct supervision of a trainer and/or transit supervisor.
• An operator is responsible for obtaining and filling out vehicle maintenance requests/needs and making daily reports of distances traveled, passengers carried and fares collected.
• The work is also reviewed through the safe and satisfactory operation of the vehicle and is performed on a shift basis.
• The work involves driving one type of service daily.

• Check lights, brakes, steering, tires, radiator and oil level prior to leaving garage.
• Drive city bus on a special route as a relief or temporary driver, picking up and discharging passengers at designated locations according to schedule.
• Safe operation of a wheelchair lift.
• Collect fares, transfers or tokens from each passenger, make change and issue transfers.
• Obtain necessary repairs and maintenance work for vehicles.
• Make required reports of passengers transported daily, number of miles bus traveled, amount of gasoline and oil used, and any unusual happenings.
• Report all accidents involving bus or passengers immediately to the Police Department.
• Refer passengers questions pertaining to transit routes to a supervisor or team leader (Operator III).
• Keep bus clean by removing litter between trips.
• Perform related tasks as required.
