Are you a law student looking to develop your legal skills while making a positive impact in our community? Join our team at Delta Dental of Iowa as a Summer Law Clerk. You will offer hands‑on support to the Compliance and Legal Departments by completing various compliance‑ and legal‑related tasks such as summarizing and communicating new regulations, drafting legal memoranda on various health plan and health insurance issues, drafting and revising policies and procedures, performing legal research and analysis, and preparing various other types of correspondence regarding assigned matters.

Working Hours & LocationMay 2026 – full‑time during the summer, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Hybrid. Johnston, Iowa.
Learning Objectives- Regulatory Oversight
- Learn types of regulations that impact the typical health plan
- Assist in reviewing, summarizing, and communicating regulations to business
- Compliance Consulting
- Perform legal research and analysis on various health plan related issues
- Assist in responding to legal and compliance inquiries/questions from business
- In‑house Counsel Role
- Learn in‑house counsel roles and responsibilities
- Assist General Counsel and/or Associate General Counsel with legal‑related projects or assignments
- Effective Compliance Program
- Update compliance‑related policies and procedures to reflect current laws and internal processes
- Assist in preparation of compliance training materials
- Writing
- Draft legal memoranda on various health‑plan related issues
- Prepare other types of correspondence
- Engage in programs and networking opportunities to strengthen business acumen in the insurance industry
- Support internship program by motivating and driving participation among intern peers to fully engage with opportunities available throughout the summer
- Represent Delta Dental of Iowa as well as the other Delta Dental companies in a professional manner both internally and externally
- Maintain strict confidentiality
- Perform other duties as assigned
- 1L who will complete first year of law school in May 2026
- Strong academic record
- Superior verbal and written communication skills
- Superior research and analytical skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, specifically in Word and Excel
- Strong critical thinking skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills in a variety of situations
- Self‑motivated to learn and ability to work independently and with teams
- Participants will be required to submit a written analysis of project work and present a summary of analysis to leadership at the end of the program
- Successful candidate will need to pass a pre‑employment/post‑offer background check and drug screen testing
