Detective - Certified Police Officer

The Johnston Police Department is seeking a dedicated and experienced Iowa-certified police officer to join our Investigations Unit as a Legacy Detective. This unique lateral transfer opportunity is designed for a proven investigator who wants to make a lasting impact, both by solving complex cases and by helping shape the future of our growing, high-performing investigative team.

The Investigations Unit includes a lieutenant, skilled detectives, and an investigative technician/analyst. Our detectives receive continuous professional development to handle diverse and challenging criminal cases and are equipped with advanced forensic tools and technology. They are supported by collateral-duty crime scene investigators and a fully outfitted CSI van, ensuring every investigation is thorough and efficient.

We’re looking for someone with proven investigative experience, exceptional communication and analytical skills, strong working knowledge of Iowa law, and a passion for continued growth and shared knowledge. The ideal candidate thrives under pressure, collaborates effectively in a team environment, and is driven to deliver justice for victims while strengthening community trust.

Applicants must currently be Iowa Law Enforcement Academy certified
, possess a valid Iowa driver’s license, and reside within one hour of the Johnston city limits within six months of hire.

Starting wage range is $73,239 - $88,179, with the current top-out salary as of FY26 at $102,058, plus a $5k lateral bonus.
