Position OverviewThis position serves as a maintenance carpenter for Joliet Treatment Center. The individual in this role will perform journeyman level work in carpentry and construction. The ideal candidate will perform general carpentry work in the repair, maintenance, construction or alteration of floors, walls, roofs, stairs, benches, doors, windows, or other similar structures in a correctional facility. In addition, they will offer guidance and instruction to individuals in custody with general carpentry tasks and inspect the quality of work completed.

- Makes repairs and performs maintenance work on buildings and equipment.
- Performs skilled carpentry work in the repair, maintenance, construction or alteration of wooden floors, walls, roofs, stairs, benches, doors, windows or other similar structures.
- Provides instruction and guidance to individuals in custody and trade staff in the proper use of and utilizes saws, joiners, cleaners, sanders, drill presses, lathes, mortising machines and other power tools.
- Offers guidance and instruction to individuals in custody with general carpentry trade task and inspects the quality of the work completed.
- Coordinates plasterers, painters, brick layers, roofers, glass block layers, plumbers, and concrete finishers scheduling work as it coincides with carpenter job.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.
- Requires knowledge, skills and mental development equivalent to completion or four (4) years of high school.
- Requires completion of an approved apprenticeship program to qualify as a journey level carpenter.
- Prefers at least three (3) years of experience in using the tools, materials, methods, and standard practices of carpentry.
- Prefers at least three (3) years of experience reading, interpreting, and working from plans, simple drawings, and/or sketches.
