Job Responsibilities
  • Receives classroom and on-the-job training in methods designed to provide role-modeling behavior, facilitate appropriate communications and develop suitable problem solving and conflict resolution skills for assigned individuals in custody.
  • Receives classroom and on-the-job training in the methods used to motivate and encourage individuals in order to promote their habilitation and treatment and to participate in the implementation of established treatment and habilitation programs.
  • Learns skills necessary to stand guard in a tower armed with firearms, to patrol yards, grounds, cell house or corridors, dormitories and work areas and to assist in searching for fugitives, and their capture and return to the institution.
  • Receives instruction in working with counselors and other professional and direct support staff in order to provide additional assistance and support services to individuals in custody, through individualized interaction and group program facilitation.
  • Assists in ensuring individuals in custody have access to necessary and appropriate medical services.
  • Escorts individuals or groups to and from destinations inside and/or outside the facility grounds including but not limited to, correctional centers, courts and hospitals.
  • Assists in conducting searches of visitors, individuals in custody, cells, cell houses and/or work locations for contraband.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Requires proof of possession of a bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the United States Secretary of Education.
Conditions of Employment
  • Requires completion of a pre-service security training course during trainee period.
  • Requires successful completion of a firearms training course and learn the proper use of firearms during trainee period.
  • Requires a valid appropriate driver’s license and the ability to travel statewide.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of the position held, is prohibited.
