General Description

This safety sensitive CDL position (SS) is to drive a commercial rated vehicle along residential routes to collect refuse and recycling. It is considered an entry‑level position for someone in training.

• Inspects truck prior to leaving on route to ensure it is properly cleaned, serviced, and fueled.
• Drives a reload refuse truck along a route to collect refuse and transfers it to a landfill.
• Empties refuse into the truck.
• Performs routine maintenance and minor repairs on the truck.
• Cleans truck inside and out.
• Provides basic customer service dealing with citizens and City employees.
• Drives a pickup truck and trailer along a residential route for picking up recycling.
• Attends safety training and other classes as directed.
• May oversee sanitation workers assigned to a route.
• Operating a city vehicle is required for essential functions.
• Performs any other related duties as required or assigned.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to four years of high school or GED, with emphasis during high school in office skills, shop skills, or other relevant areas, plus 0 to 6 months related experience and/or training or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Mental alertness and adaptability to office and field area work routines.
• Ability to read and understand documents such as policy manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers, including performing these with money and other forms of measurement.
• Ability to use common sense to carry out simple multi‑step instructions and handle standardized situations with limited variables.

• Class B CDL license with air brakes endorsement required to operate assigned equipment or training to obtain CDL.
