Bering Strait School District has an opening for a School Counselor in our district. Our School Counseling Department is growing and working towards being a fully comprehensive program modeled after the American School Counselor Association Model.
Being comfortable using technology to track student progress and to prepare documentation is a significant advantage. BSSD utilizes a comprehensive web database for tracking student progress called Power School, Google Drive and Macbooks; technology is used for most day-to-day tasks. All classrooms are wirelessly connected to the Internet.

Job DescriptionTitle: School Counselor
Qualifications:
- Current Alaska Type C special services certificate in an approved counseling program
- Master's degree in School Counseling preferred
- Experience in schools is highly recommended
- Demonstrated ability to live, work and travel in a cross-cultural setting
- Computer literate
Goal: Provide professional counseling services to students in the Bering Strait School District. Increase the effectiveness of interventions school-wide.
Essential Functions- Provide a comprehensive school counseling program
- Participate in site peer helper and site advisor programs
- Provide individual and small group counseling
- Apply crisis intervention strategies
- Offer programs, training and services on topics such as substance abuse, suicide prevention/intervention and physical/sexual abuse
- Assist students in post secondary planning and career education
- Refer students and parents to appropriate agencies for assistance
- Assist staff in the development/implementation of student management plans
- Communicate effectively with students, parents and all staff members
- Develop and locate materials needed to implement interventions/enrichments
- Model effective intervention and enrichments
- Keep accurate current records of school and student achievement in regard to interventions
- Monitor results of all interventions
- This position requires air travel on commercial and small commuter aircraft

Reports To: Principal and District Coordinator of Counseling
Salary: Placement on Salary Schedule per negotiated agreement
Length of Employment: 192 days
