Job Summary

The Student Nutrition Area Supervisor directly supervises school-based Student Nutrition personnel at multiple Anchorage School District locations. The supervisor partners with and supports school kitchen teams to deliver high-quality, nutritious meals that meet all district, state, and federal requirements. This position coaches site managers, promotes collaborative problem-solving, and serves as the primary connection between school administrators and the Student Nutrition central office.

The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).

Job Requirements

The following are required:

  • An associate’s degree in culinary arts, nutrition, hospitality management, business management, or a closely related field. Years of experience may be considered in lieu of the degree requirement.
  • A minimum of three years of experience with supervision, training, and evaluation of employees.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and supervise the work of others.
  • Proficiency in working with Microsoft Office Suite and related programs.
  • Scheduling skills such as timeline development, planning, and reporting.
  • Work experience evidencing the ability to maintain cooperative and productive working relationships with inter-departments, students, and the public.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

The following are preferred:

  • A bachelor’s degree in management, business, nutrition, or a related area.
  • Previous management experience in a large-scale food service operation.
  • Work experience in leading and managing geographically dispersed teams of employees.
  • Knowledge of USDA Child Nutrition Programs, such as the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs.
  • An understanding of food safety guidelines and regulations as they relate to food service.
Essential Job Functions
  • Conducts onsite visits with cafeteria teams, delivering timely coaching and training that foster staff development in areas such as meal patterns, allergy management, line flow, just-in-time food production, inventory management, ordering, building administration communication, meal times, proper food safety and quality, and related.
  • Performs and documents routine site visits and annual program reviews. Reviews and documents necessary corrective actions with school-based staff.
  • Assesses operational processes such as line flow and meal presentation and implements measurable improvements.
  • Ensures sanitation, food, and employee safety procedures are followed and documented.
  • Maintains knowledge of food-safety regulations and delivers staff training to ensure site compliance.
  • Plans, organizes, and leads while promoting a collaborative, supportive culture.
  • Serves as a communication liaison between principals, school staff, parents, students, and the Student Nutrition Department.
  • Conducts annual and routine training to assure school-based personnel understand job expectations, program policies, procedures, and how to meet department objectives. Provides follow-up training/coaching with staff to ensure comprehension and proficiency.
  • Reviews site submissions of mandatory daily, weekly, and monthly reports and supporting documentation, verifying for accuracy, and returning for correction when necessary.
  • Works side‑by‑side with cafeteria teams to conduct monthly food inventories and regular audits of small and large equipment, approve necessary repairs, and collaboratively recommend timely replacements or upgrades that keep kitchens operating smoothly and efficiently.
  • Collaborates with the business development manager, school principals, café managers, and other key interview team members to hire the right teammates—supporting recruitment and interviews, coordinating hiring paperwork, leading site-based onboarding, and providing ongoing coaching while tracking performance growth.
