The school counselor works with school staff, parents, and the community to create a caring climate through a comprehensive developmental school counseling program. The counselor reports to and is evaluated by the site principal.
This position requires a valid Alaska type C certificate. The number of work days is based on the AEA negotiated pay scale. Details are available on the Labor Relations Department website. Positions with 0.50 to 1.0 FTE are associated with the Alaska Teachers’ Retirement System (TRS); those with 0.40 to 0.49 FTE are associated with the Alaska Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).
Positions under 0.39 FTE are not eligible for state retirement benefits.
Required:
- A valid Alaska type C special services certificate with endorsements as a school counselor, guidance and counseling, or school social work.
- Completion of a school-based counseling internship with school-age children.
- Experience providing behavioral and academic interventions with youth.
- School guidance counseling experience.
The successful candidate will:
- Schedule students into appropriate academic courses.
- Use appropriate counseling techniques for various functioning levels.
- Provide career and educational counseling.
- Act as a student advocate.
- Implement guidance curriculum via classroom lessons and content infusion.
- Support and reinforce classroom teachers' roles.
- Serve as a consultant to staff and parents.
- Counsel individuals and groups for social and emotional resiliency.
- Consult with parents and families on student needs.
- Act as a liaison among staff, parents, and agencies.
- Conduct parent meetings and workshops.
- Train staff to plan and implement interventions for adolescents.
- Develop and apply counseling techniques for diverse levels.
- Be accessible for student counseling needs.
- Increase awareness of school-work relationships.
- Participate in program development, maintenance, and evaluation.
- Assist with early identification, remediation, and referrals.
- Promote a positive school climate.
- Engage in professional growth.
- Assist with intake and exit processes.
- Help establish positive behavior plans.
- Provide parenting training as needed.
- Collect data for program evaluation.
Requires frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking, hearing, and visual abilities. Must be able to lift less than 40 lbs, understand instructions, recall facts, handle conflicts, and make decisions under pressure. Must manage stress working with diverse individuals in a dynamic environment.
