Assists in the care and tutoring of students who may have physical, social-emotional, behavioral, self-help and/or developmental deficits. This position may be placed in Intensive Resource (IR) or Extended Resource (ER) secondary special education classrooms, depending on District and building needs.
New Hire IncentivesNew hire bonus: $2,000 paid after the successful completion of the first 30 days of employment. Retention bonus: $2,000 payable in June upon the successful completion of the current school year (prorated for part-time employees).
Salary and Work ScheduleNew Hire Hourly Rate:
Grade 7: $23.15 - $25.90 DOE.
Internal Hourly Rate:
Determined by ESSA Negotiated Agreement.
Work Day: 7 hours.
Work Year: 9 months.
Bargaining Unit:
Education Support Staff Association (ESSA).
- Must meet at least one of the following qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent and have completed the Para Professional Assessment, or have the ability to pass it within four months of hire.
- Associate’s degree or higher.
- Completion of two years of higher education (at least 48 semester hours) or the equivalent.
- Understanding of developmental disabilities.
- Proper lifting skills to safely lift a minimum of 50 lbs. regularly.
- Empathy for the special needs of disabled children and the ability to communicate respectfully and appropriately with physically and mentally disabled students.
- Successful completion of de-escalation training required within the first six months of employment.
- Knowledge of basic reading, math, and curricular areas appropriate for the age level of students.
- Ability to communicate clearly and consistently with students, staff, and parents, including calming upset students, defusing conflict situations, and safely restraining out-of-control students who present a danger.
- Ability to remain outside for 30 minutes at
-20°F. - Valid driver’s license and use of a personal vehicle. If ASL skills are required, applicant must have completed ASL I and ASL II.
