Brief Position

Description:

If you’re ready to empower the next generation with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) skills and excited to inspire young minds, the Juneau Economic Development Council is seeking an individual that is interested in engaging and educating K-12 Alaskan youth in the fascinating world of STEM through FIRST LEGO League and FIRST Tech Challenge robotics in a fun and interactive way.
In addition to starting and supporting robotics teams in Juneau and remotely all over Alaska, this position includes collaborating with organizations to support the implementation of new Trades training initiatives and encouraging young people to explore entrepreneurship through school programs and camp experiences.
If you have a passion for creative and dynamic environments and a desire to foster exciting workforce skills in children and young adults, consider joining our team!

Day in Life of JV

8:00am - Arrive and pick up any projects left from the day before. Read email from the remote village you had to look up on the map yesterday after your Zoom call with their new FIRST LEGO League team, and watch the video clip they proudly made of their first mission.
9:00am - Meet with Program Manager to discuss hot topics, deadlines, projects, training opportunities, and items where JV or Program Manager may need support.
9:30am - Contact volunteers about upcoming tournaments and get three more referees lined up for the Juneau tournament. Check the shipping status on trophies headed to Anchorage, Bethel, Utqiagvik, Fairbanks and Juneau.
12:00pm - Lunch (time is flexible).
1:00pm - Respond to coaches needing assistance, continue tournament planning, and wrap up loose robotics projects for the day before shifting gears.
3:00pm - Check in with the teacher who wanted to host a Junior Achievement volunteer and send her the curriculum options to choose one for her class.
3:30pm - Meet with JEDC staff, local university technical school staff, union and industry leaders, and school counselors to review successes and lessons from last summer's Trade Up Juneau pilot program and brainstorm ways to grow and improve the program.
5:00pm - Leave for home, knowing that young people in Juneau and all over Alaska are better off because of what you did today.
