Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Bridge Design Section, is looking for an Engineer/Architect 1 to help us Keep Alaska Moving!
What you will be doing:In this position you will perform structural engineering analysis and calculations for the development of bridge load ratings, bridge management tasks, and overload permit assessment. You will also complete bridge safety inspections, including routine, non-redundant steel tension member (NSTM), low water, and in-depth inspections. Some design and preparation of bridge construction plans, specifications, cost estimates, and report tasks may be involved as well.

The DOT&PF Bridge Section provides design services for new bridge and bridge rehabilitation construction projects, as well as a broad range of services associated with the existing inventory of the State's 1,000 public highway bridges. We work hard to support our Department’s mission to Keep Alaska Moving.
The Bridge Section is a production-oriented office comprised of hands‑on engineers who put safety first and are recognized nationally as experts in our field. The office culture is supportive and encouraging, with opportunities for growth. The office has 25 staff members – small enough to be personal, but large enough to have a broad knowledge base in all subdisciplines of bridge engineering.

Alaska DOT&PF offers great opportunities for professional development, having a wide variety of challenges involving all aspects of bridge analysis and design. The incumbent will learn state‑of‑the‑art tools, technologies, and methods to tackle these challenges. Comprehensive staff development is an important aspect of this job. Formal and in‑house training are provided with a focus on advancing an Engineer 1 to the Technical Engineer 1 position.
Support to get a drone pilot's license and use drones for bridge inspection is also provided.
The position is located in the Alaska DOT&PF Headquarters building in Juneau that is situated adjacent to the Gastineau Channel. We offer flexible work schedules. Travel opportunities throughout the State are available.
Who we are looking for:To be successful in the position the candidate will need the following competencies:
- Structural Engineering: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods related to the design and analysis of complex structures using a variety of materials. Structures may include aerospace systems or structures, and other determinate or indeterminate systems.
- Analytical Thinking/Problem Solving: uses a logical, systematic, sequential approach to address problems or opportunities or manage a situation by drawing on one’s knowledge and experience base and calling on other references and resources as necessary.
- Oral and Written Communication: Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral and written presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
Note:
- This position requires a Valid Alaska Driver's License.
- The incumbent must be physically able to descend / ascend bridge embankments and riverbanks.
Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Architect.

Positions in this class require professional registration as either an Engineer or an Architect. The employer will designate which professional field is required for each position.
Persons not registered in the State of Alaska must be registered in a state recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers and Land Surveyors eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.48.191(b).
