Position: Wildland Fire & Resource Technician 3 - White Mountain Lead Crew member (PCN 10-N17083)

What You Will Be Doing

This is a lead crew member position on a 20‑person hand crew (Type 2 Initial Attack). Primary duties will include wildland fire suppression, chainsaw operations, water pump operations, burnout and backfiring, line digging, and safely working with and around fire mitigation equipment. While assigned to fuel reduction tasks, experienced firefighters will be responsible for pile burning, felling and removing hazardous trees, and guiding lower‑level technicians.

When not on assignment, crew members must maintain readiness and be available throughout the fire season. Lead crew members are expected to provide direction and supervision for less experienced firefighters when needed.

Working Environment You Can Expect

White Mountain is based out of Fairbanks, AK, and is in conjunction with Fairbanks Area Forestry. This position will require travel within Alaska and in other states. You will be required to live and work in remote locations, shifts often lasting 16 hours a day, and for periods of up to 14 to 21 days. Work will be carried out across all terrain and weather conditions.

Competencies

• Fire Management – Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and theories of fire management, including fire behavior, ecology, prescribed fire strategies, and fire detection, prevention, and suppression tactics.
• Incident Management – Knowledge of tactics, technologies, principles, and processes to protect, analyze, prioritize, and handle incidents.
• Risk Management – Knowledge of risk assessment and mitigation principles, methods, and tools.
• Public Safety and Security – Knowledge of public safety, security operations, occupational health and safety, and investigative techniques.
• Vulnerability Assessment – Knowledge of vulnerability assessment principles and mitigation countermeasures.

Minimum Experience and Qualifications

• Twelve months of wildland fire fighting or forestry field experience, with at least six months at the developmental level.
• Red Card qualification under the National Incident Qualification System.
• Ability to pass the Work Capacity Test at the "Arduous" level (3‑mile hike carrying a 45‑pound pack).
• Alaska driver’s license (or conditional offer pending acquisition).
• Minimum age of eighteen years.
• Eligibility to work in Alaska and out of state, including recall status during the fire season.
