Wildlife Biologist 3 (PCN 112069) – State of Alaska
Job DescriptionPosition open to all applicants. Recruitment period broadened and extended to allow a larger applicant pool.
About the DivisionThe Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation, is recruiting for a Wildlife Biologist 3 located in Dillingham covering the northern Bristol Bay area (Game Management Unit 17).
Responsibilities- Management of terrestrial wildlife in the northern Bristol Bay area (~20,000 sq mi).
- Oversight of the Mulchatna caribou herd, including intensive management, hunting and trapping season administration, and rapid response to nuisance wildlife and public safety situations.
- Provide technical expertise and recommendations regarding wildlife populations, ecology, and long‑term conservation.
- Conduct aerial and ground surveys, investigations, data analysis, and report writing.
- Lead and mentor a Wildlife Biologist 2 and a Program Technician.
- Coordinate with state and intergovernmental agencies and resolve public safety concerns.
- Write technical reports and operational plans.
- Collaborate with wildlife biologists and managers statewide on management challenges.
- Provide information to the public, media, scientific conferences, advisory committees, and the Board of Game.
- Travel frequently within the management area and state; use firearms and operate small aircraft in mountainous terrain.
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management.
- One year of full‑performance professional level biologist experience (e.g., Fishery Biologist 2, Wildlife Biologist 2, Habitat Biologist 2, Fisheries Geneticist 1 with the State of Alaska or equivalent).
- Designing, planning, and implementing wildlife management programs for large mammals.
- Monitoring and evaluating large mammal populations, field work, population modeling, sustainable harvest goals.
- Capturing, immobilizing, and performing physical examinations of large mammal species.
- Collecting aerial and ground survey data, preparing summaries and technical reports.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills for complex public and stakeholder inquiries.
- Valid driver’s license; possession or access to firearms and ammunition.
- Pilot’s license (FAA) and state flight certification recommended.
- Wildlife Biologist certification by a professional society, Alaska Peace Officer status, wildlife firearm, animal capture immobilization, and animal welfare certifications recommended.
- Energetic, committed, knowledgeable in large mammal wildlife biology.
- Experience in outdoor field conditions, comfortable with travel, firearms, and small aircraft.
- Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and data management skills.

- Proof of education and relevant certifications (if available).
