Overview

About the Agency

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission (CFEC) works to conserve and sustain the economic health of Alaska’s commercial fisheries by permitting commercial fishers and, when appropriate, limiting the number of participants in certain fisheries. As a quasi-judicial agency, CFEC issues permits, manages vessel licensing, and provides due‑process hearings and appeals.

Responsibilities

As a Fishery Analyst for CFEC, you will conduct research, statistical analysis, and reporting essential to the implementation of the Alaska Limited Entry Act. In this role, you will:

  • Develop and maintain SAS, SQL, R, and Python programs.
  • Produce annual demographic, economic, and regional reports.
  • Analyze permit and fishery data.
  • Support the Commission with regulatory, economic, and demographic analyses used statewide.

You will work with one of the most complete commercial fisheries datasets in the world and contribute directly to data‑driven policy and the sustainability of Alaska’s commercial fisheries.

Organization, Mission, and Culture

As CFEC’s Fishery Analyst, you will be a key member of a small, highly collaborative research team where you will:

  • Apply analytical, statistical, and programming skills daily to answer complex questions involving fisheries participation, demographics, earnings, and permit activity.
  • Contribute to research, data development, regulatory analysis, and continuous improvement of CFEC’s programs and systems.
  • Grow in fisheries science, statistics, data analytics, and programming supported by continued education.
  • Innovate, refine methods, improve workflows, strengthen data systems, and shape how fisheries data are analyzed and presented.

You’ll work closely with positive, supportive, and highly competent colleagues who value teamwork, professional respect, and a healthy work–life balance.

Benefits of Joining Our Team

CFEC’s research section encourages autonomy, creativity, and professional exploration. You will have opportunities to pursue specialized research interests, develop new programs, and take deep dives into Alaska’s diverse fisheries. The research team supports flexible work arrangements, respects personal and family commitments, and collaborates to ensure deadlines are met without burnout.

Working Conditions

CFEC’s offices are located inside the Jordan Creek Mall in beautiful Juneau, Alaska—near the Mendenhall Glacier. The indoor mall setting offers comfortable break‑time walks year‑round, regardless of weather, and you will occasionally travel to our records archive near Lemon Creek. You will work in a quiet, professional, and team‑oriented office with colleagues who value efficiency, collaboration, and work‑life balance. This position may require occasional travel within the state to meetings and conferences.

Qualifications

We are seeking applicants with strong analytical skills, programming ability, and a deep interest in Alaska’s commercial fisheries. The most competitive applicants will demonstrate:

  • Proficiency with SQL, SAS, R, and/or Python.
  • Ability to independently interpret complex written materials such as statutes, regulations, management plans, and historical records, and apply them to analytical tasks.
  • Strong statistical reasoning skills, with the ability to perform univariate and multivariate analysis and present trends clearly and accurately.
  • Ability to manage time and competing deadlines while maintaining a positive, flexible attitude in response to shifting priorities.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships within CFEC and with external agencies such as ADF&G.
  • Ability to clearly explain analytical results, demographic trends, and statistical methods to people from varied socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, including those who may disagree with CFEC practices or policy.

While no minimum requirements have been established for this position, the following qualifications are strongly preferred:
