Fish and Wildlife Geneticist 2 (PCN 115323)
State of Alaska – Division of Commercial Fisheries – Division of Fish and Game – Gene Conservation Laboratory (GCL) – Anchorage, Alaska. The position is open to Alaska Residents only.
OverviewThe ADFG Gene Conservation Laboratory (GCL) is a professional-level geneticist and project leader for complex wildlife genetics and genomics research across Alaska, working with biology teams to provide genetic expertise and support scientific management decisions.
Responsibilities- Design and implement projects using proven genetic methods, molecular techniques, and population genetic theory.
- Provide consultation on genetic questions and coordinate genetic research across the state.
- Compile and analyze data; present findings orally and in written formats to scientific and non‑scientific audiences.
- Provide review and authorship of research manuscripts.
- Prepare and submit grant applications.
- Build relationships and collaborations with state, federal, tribal, university, non‑governmental, and international partners to support sustainable wildlife management.

Essential skills:
- Analysis and Assessment – using IT to access, collect, analyze, maintain, and disseminate data.
- Biology knowledge of organisms and ecological interactions.
- Genetics: DNA biochemistry, gene interaction, inheritance, population genetics, evolution.
- Communication: oral and written presentation to science and lay audiences.
- Scientific research: study design, data collection, analysis, interpretation, reporting.
- Technical competence: applied technical knowledge, advising others.
Bachelor's or postgraduate degree in genetics, molecular biology, or related fields (biology, biometrics, botany, microbiology, zoology, natural resource management, environmental science, ecology). Combination of education and experience must provide competencies listed above.
Equivalent experience: professional experience developing and applying genetic research for fish, invertebrates, aquatic plants, or wildlife management operations.
Special Notes- Valid driver’s license required.
