Overview
State Equipment Fleet (SEF) of the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities is looking for a Heavy Duty Mechanic – Rural ARFF – Advanced Journey who will professionally maintain all heavy equipment used for highways, secondary roads and rural airports.
Location100 Valley Who Road, Dutch Harbor, AK. The role requires travel by small aircraft for maintenance in remote locations, including day trips and overnight stays.
Responsibilities- Maintain heavy equipment such as motor graders, loaders, dump trucks, roller compactors, sand spreaders, backhoes, and tractor‑trailer combinations.
- Diagnose, repair, and perform preventive maintenance on a wide variety of heavy trucks and equipment using computerized diagnostics.
- Resolve complex mechanical and electronic problems through troubleshooting, repairs, and specialized maintenance.
- Operate equipment safely for service and move or operate vehicles when required.
- Class "A" Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required.
- Proficiency in operating heavy equipment and performing maintenance on diesel and hydraulic machinery.
- Knowledge of vehicle engines, parts, and systems; skilled in diagnosis and repair of mechanical and electronic components.
- Strong mechanical aptitude, flexibility, and self‑management; ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Steel‑toed boots or other approved protection; ETT 40‑hour course; ARFF training, including 40‑hour course and emergency trauma treatment.
- Knowledge of firearm usage and ammunition handling; capable of performing aircraft rescue and firefighting duties per Part 139.
