The Department of Family and Community Services, Office of Children's Services (OCS), is recruiting for a full-time Protective Service Specialist 1/2/3 in Nome, Alaska. This position is open to Alaska residents.

As a Protective Service Specialist (PSS), you will be responsible for all aspects of Child Protection Services in the Family Services Unit, the Investigations & Assessment Unit, or as a Generalist covering both.

Duties include:

• Investigating reports of abuse and/or neglect.
• Preparing plans for intervention by soliciting the cooperation of the family and others.
• Gathering information about family dynamics and functionality.
• Developing plans to ensure child safety while assisting parents in addressing their diminished protective factors.
• Placing children out of the home with a relative or licensed foster home when necessary.
• Providing ongoing and/or in-home services to families.
• Coordinating referrals to other service providers and agencies.
• Writing and submitting reports to Court.
• Working closely with Tribal/Community Partners.
• Maintaining frequent face‑to‑face and telephonic contact with parents and caregivers of children in custody.
• Traveling as required depending on client location.

Full‑time benefits include insurance, retirement, paid leave, and twelve paid holidays per year. Your first twelve months are probationary and considered a training period. The position is field‑based but part‑time teleworking may be an option upon eligibility.

This position is based out of the Nome office and requires travel in small aircraft, all‑terrain vehicles, or small boats to remote villages and rural locations.

Frequent travel of 4+ times a month is expected. Overnight stays may be required in rustic conditions with exposure to extreme weather. You may also assist other field offices within the Northern Region as needed. This role is ideal for those who enjoy adventure, value cultural humility, and are motivated by meaningful public service.

Work may extend into evenings, weekends, and on‑call rotations. Staff are expected to work during pandemic and other natural disasters. Starting as a level 1 (trainee) or 2 (journey) is dependent on experience and qualification.
