Evening, weekend, and or distance offerings for UH Maui College and or Outreach sites (Hana, Lanai, Molokai) may be assigned as part of the regular workload.

The position may be converted from 9-month to 11-month, based on program/operational needs.

This is NOT a remote position – the job requires in-person work.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teach a range of Chemistry and Biochemistry courses and work with the Physical Sciences Concentration specialization of the Associate in Science in the Natural Science Degree Program.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to support Chemistry classes in support of various degrees.
  • Work with colleagues to identify, plan, develop, and implement curriculum and learning strategies to meet student, special population, college, and community needs.
  • Perform related work activities, including but not limited to:
  • Advising and counseling students; preparing/adapting/revising Student Learning Outcomes and Assessment strategies for all courses.
  • Developing and/or redesigning curricula for online and other distance education applications; participating in campus-related activities.
  • Independently planning, organizing, and carrying out instructional and non-instructional assignments.
  • Provide college and community service, including student recruitment.
  • Participate in professional development activities related to program development.
  • Perform chemistry-related duties as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry

OR

  • Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, Geochemistry, Chemical Oceanography, Organic Chemistry, Forensic Chemistry, Chemical Physics, or Environmental Chemistry with 18 credits of advanced coursework in Chemistry or Biochemistry.

(Advanced coursework is defined as 300-400 level courses offered in a Bachelor’s Program)

Desirable Qualifications
  • Strong preference given to candidates with teaching experience, preferably at a community college, or post-secondary level, with an emphasis on Chemistry and Introductory Biochemistry first-year chemistry courses.
  • PhD in Chemistry or related field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Small-Scale Chemistry methodology.
  • Experience with developing Chemistry courses, including laboratory sections.
  • Knowledge through coursework and/or experience with educational technology, distance education, and alternative educational delivery systems.
  • Work experience in business, government, industry, and/or non-profit organizations demonstrating practical application of academic content.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Experience teaching in the first two years of a Chemistry curriculum.
  • The ability to apply knowledge of Native Hawaiian culture to effectively collaborate with multicultural groups and individuals from diverse academic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
