Position: Engineer I / Engineer II, Distribution Planning - Maui

Engineers I & II

Job Function: The role involves evaluating and recommending solutions and alternatives to ensure a safe, reliable, and orderly development of Hawaii’s distribution system. The engineer conducts planning studies and analyses for the integration of new customer loads, distribution energy resources (DER), and transmission & distribution (T&D) equipment.

Essential Functions
  • Traditional Distribution Planning
    • Forecasts and analyses distribution substation transformer and circuit loadings to meet planning criteria.
    • Develops solutions and alternatives for normal and emergency overloads and abnormal voltage conditions.
    • Creates single‑line diagrams for solution requirements.
    • Reviews and recommends circuit and infrastructure requirements for large customers and subdivisions.
  • Distribution Energy Resources (DER) Integration
    • Performs technical reviews and interconnection studies for DER and utility‑scale generation.
    • Develops planning single‑line diagrams for Company interconnection requirements.
    • Analyzes potential DER grid services to solve distribution grid needs.
    • Conducts distribution non‑wires alternative analysis related to capital deferral of traditional wires projects.
  • Distribution Technical Support
    • Conducts studies for planning projects and prepares reports and presentations for upper management and stakeholders.
    • Participates in committees, task forces, and special projects requiring knowledge of the distribution system.
  • Utility Acumen & Knowledge
    • Investigates or researches industry practices, IEEE standards, and general power industry developments.
  • Participates in company emergency response activities as assigned.
Basic Qualifications

Knowledge Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent, with an emphasis in Power System Analysis preferred.
  • Technical knowledge of electrical engineering principles in power system analysis (load flows, power quality, reliability, voltage drop, losses, short‑circuit analysis).
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and related software (e.g., micro‑station, spreadsheets).
  • Knowledge of utility rates, tariffs, PURPA, and general energy issues (Engineer II only).

Skills Requirements:

  • Strong interpersonal skills, discretion, and tact in dealing with diverse stakeholders.
  • In‑depth analytical, organizational, and conceptual skills to manage multiple projects.
  • Adaptability to rapidly changing priorities in a demanding work environment.
  • Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills.
  • (Engineer II only) Strong interpersonal skills to influence and persuade various groups or individuals.

Experience Requirements:

  • Engineer I: 1–2 years of engineering work experience in planning, operations, or design.
  • Engineer II: 5–7 years of electric utility experience in power system planning, operations, protection, or design, plus Professional Engineer registration in the State of Hawaii.
