Speech-Language Pathologist II, III, IV - North Hawaii Regional Special Education Office

Apply for this position at the Hawaiʻi State Department of Education. The authorized level of this position is Speech Language Pathologist IV; applications are being accepted down to Speech Language Pathologist II in the event of recruiting difficulties.

Salary Range

Speech Language Pathologist II, SR-18: $5,417.00 - $5,967.00 per month
Speech Language Pathologist III, SR-20: $5,888.00 - $6,469.00 per month
Speech Language Pathologist IV, SR-22: $6,222.00 - $6,917.00 per month

Examples of Duties
  • Plans, develops and coordinates various programs;
  • Arranges for clinics;
  • Provides therapy;
  • Consults with personnel in allied fields;
  • Administers a variety of speech-language assessment instruments and interprets test results in conducting diagnostic evaluation;
  • Participates in research projects;
  • Provides advisory and consultative services to teachers and other school officials, parents, other therapists, diagnostic team members, etc.;
  • May testify in court to justify diagnostic or treatment procedures or recommendations;
  • May supervise lower level speech pathologists and others;
  • Coordinates and utilizes testing and other services provided by other departments and agencies.
Minimum Qualifications

Basic Education Requirement
Applicants for all levels must possess a master’s degree from an accredited college or university in a speech-language pathology or communication sciences and disorders program approved by ASHA.

NOTE: If you will graduate within six (6) months of application from an accredited university and will meet the Education Requirement upon your graduation, you must provide a letter attesting to such from your department chair or university, along with your most current official transcripts. Final official transcript showing receipt of the degree must be submitted upon graduation.

Experience Requirement (progressively responsible work experience):

  • Speech-Language Pathologist II – 0 years (no experience required);
  • Speech-Language Pathologist III – 0 years (no experience required);
  • Speech-Language Pathologist IV – 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower level in this series; supervisory aptitude may be accepted.

For Level IV and above, at least one (1) year of experience must have been comparable to the next lower level in this series.

Specialized Experience – a full professional understanding of the theories, research, evidence-based practices of speech-language pathology and appropriate application to student needs.

  • Level II, III:
    No experience required, but applicants must have met all academic and clinical practicum requirements necessary for eligibility in the ASHA clinical fellowship program.
  • Level IV:
    Supervisory aptitude rather than actual supervisory experience may be accepted.

Certificate and License Requirements (Level III and above)

  • Valid Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from ASHA;
  • Valid State of Hawaii Speech Pathologist license.

Driver’s License Requirement – Applicants must possess a current, valid driver’s license.

Quality of Experience – Possession of the required number of years of experience is not in itself proof of qualification; the applicant’s overall experience must demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position.

Supplemental Information

Salary – based on full-time employment and includes shortage and school year differentials, if applicable.

Requirements – Applicants must meet all requirements for the position they are seeking as of the application date.

  • Experience is calculated based on full-time, 40-hour workweeks; part‑time experience is prorated.
  • Temporary Assignment experience must be verified and attached to the application (TA History Report, signed letter, or SF‑10 forms).
