Assistant Plumbing Inspector – SR-16

There are two immediate permanent vacancies: one full‑time position in Hilo and one in Kailua‑Kona.
Applicants may be available for temporary appointments that could lead to permanent status.
- Inspect and test plumbing, gas, and sewer line installations for compliance with building plans, plumbing code, and safety standards.
- Review applications for plumbing and gas permits and verify information against existing building permits.
- Examine plans for less complex installations and determine code compatibility.
- Inspect installations in residential, small commercial, and industrial buildings, including sanitary plumbing systems, domestic water systems, sprinkler systems, water heaters, gas piping, cesspools, and septic tanks.
- Inspect sewer lines, wet and dry standpipes, and fire sprinkler systems.
- Check the size, type, grade, and alignment of pipes and fittings; verify gas and hot water system quality, tank capacity, pressure, and leakage.
- Issue notices of violations and follow up to ensure corrections are made.
- Provide information to contractors, owners, and others on plumbing codes and regulations.
- Maintain work records and prepare inspection reports.
- Enter and update permit status in the permitting software system.
- Assist in inspecting installations in large or multi‑story buildings as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- High school graduation.
- Three (3) years of experience inspecting or supervising plumbing installation work.
- Current State of Hawai‘i Master Plumber or Journeyman‑level Plumber license (a copy must be submitted with the application).
- Valid State of Hawai‘i Class 3 driver’s license (or comparable) at the time of filing.
