OverviewThe Hawaii State Department of Education is seeking a Bilingual/Bicultural School/Home Assistant (Marshallese/Kosraean) for the West Hawaii District Annex. This position supports family engagement, translation, and community liaison activities to promote student success and parental involvement.
Examples of Duties- Serves as liaison to promote cooperation and understanding between parents, school staff, and project personnel.
- Assists in solving students’ educational and related problems; disseminates project information.
- Explains school programs, policies, and procedures to parents; translates and relates parents’ concerns to project and school staff.
- Identifies community resources, maintains resource files, and suggests resources to assist parents with problems.
- Encourages parental participation in school activities and assists in organizing Parent Advisory Groups.
- Assists in planning and developing projects to increase parent participation in school activities.
- Plans for and/or conducts information sessions for parents and assists in translating information on social and health programs.
- Participates in training programs and prepares activity reports.
General Experience Requirements: Two (2) years of paid or volunteer work with individuals and groups, demonstrating the ability to:
- Understand and explain materials related to the program/project/activity.
- Establish and maintain rapport and encourage participation.
- Speak effectively with individuals and groups and elicit pertinent information.
- Plan and conduct group information sessions.
- Prepare activity reports.
- Recognize basic individual human needs.
Specialized Experience Requirement: At least one (1) year of experience with knowledge and skills in Marshallese (Koraean) culture and language, and ability to establish and maintain rapport with Marshallese communities.
- Knowledge of Marshallese (Koraean) culture.
- Ability to speak, read, write, and understand Marshallese (Koraean).
- Ability to establish and maintain rapport with Marshallese communities.
License: Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license to drive in Hawaii.
Substitutions Allowed: Substitutions for general experience include Human Services curricula leading to an achievement certificate or degree from an accredited community college with field experience in Community Service. See details below.

- Partial completion of a full-time Human Services curriculum with field experience (month-for-month substitution)
