The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for accurate preparation of all equipment drawings required for customer approval, shop manufacturing and installation. This role acts as the project lead for jobs throughout design, fabrication, and start‑up of the equipment, being the main point of contact with the customer throughout.
The duties include reviewing specifications with the customer, preparing approval drawings, communicating with customers about questions and schedules, preparing accurate manufacturing drawings, communicating with shop personnel regarding design questions, reviewing equipment before shipment to ensure all design details have been implemented, supporting Customer Service for any issues that may arise, and demonstrating strong mechanical design, project management, and communication skills.
Qualifications- Dedication to excellence and quality output
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology or equivalent experience
- Minimum 3 years of design experience in process or heavy industrial equipment
- Process equipment design or operation experience preferred
- Experience starting up or troubleshooting operating equipment desired
- Design experience with sheet metal, hoppers, chutes, structural supports
- Ability to read electrical and pneumatic diagrams with general knowledge of industrial instrumentation and controls desired
- Proficient use of Inventor or Solidworks for 3D CAD, AutoCAD for 2D CAD, Excel, and Word
- Strong project management, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
- Excellent customer support and management
- Problem‑solving skills (inter/cross departmental)
- Willingness to travel (10% typical)
- Promote excellence throughout the department
- Develop proper and efficient equipment designs, including large‑scale systems
- Produce detailed mechanical equipment drawings using CAD (Inventor and AutoCAD)
- Manage assigned projects
- Maintain CAD drawing files
- Interface with shop floor fabricators and tradesmen
- Engage in general project engineering and customer contact, including occasional customer visits
- Produce quality and accurate parts, models, and drawings
- Handle drawing transmittals
- Adhere to schedules and release dates
- Provide prompt and effective communication with customers and co‑workers
- Understand company procedures and processes
- Perform any duties assigned by the manager
