Job Description
Tax Senior Manager, Nonprofit (Senior Manager) – responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, and identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex nonprofit tax issues.
Responsibilities Tax Compliance- Ensures clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing their tax and reporting burdens, and ensures Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual are adhered to.
- Conducts review of T/Rs and resolves all tax issues with clients; involves specialists where appropriate.
- Plans for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consults with the client and/or partner as needed.
- Reviews Forms 990, 990‑PF and 990‑T work papers and disclosure for audited financial statements.
- Plans and reviews the tax process and the procedures, including:
- Budgeting and staffing
- Monitoring engagement process and actual time incurred vs. budget with assistance of Senior
- Timely billing including management of identified out‑of‑scope activity and communication to client
- Timely collection of A/R
- Manages client relationships/expectations in accordance with the project
- Provides advice to clients in a timely manner
- Identifies complex issues to be researched as needed; clearly and concisely frames issues and reports the analysis.
- Involves firm specialists, as appropriate.
- Assists with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient and effective methods to maximize client benefits.
- Applies tax knowledge and knowledge of business/industry to recommend solutions.
- Develops and implements a work plan to include/organize specialized tax services (STS) assistance on ongoing projects from client.
- Serves as a technical resource to peers within the region.
- Manages written or phone inquiries from federal and state agencies with little or no assistance.
- Ensures client service teams comply with Firm policy regarding written tax advice (WTA).
- Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to improve the position of clients, the firm, or firm personnel.
- Reviews studies of tax implications and offers clients alternative courses of action.
- Researches and implements nonprofit tax strategies, including experimentation with promising new strategies and ideas.
- Identifies and leverages lessons learned on prior projects, offering input on how to improve processes and methods.
- Supervises RISE Nonprofit Tax Associates, Senior Associates, and Managers on all projects.
- Reviews work prepared by the Nonprofit Tax team and provides review comments.
- Trains Nonprofit Tax team on how to use all current software tools.
- Acts as a career advisor to Nonprofit Tax Associates, Senior Associates, and Managers.
- Schedules and manages workload of Nonprofit Tax Associates, Senior Associates, and Managers.
- Provides verbal and written performance feedback to Nonprofit Tax Associates, Senior Associates, and Managers.
- Trains Nonprofit Tax Associates, Senior Associates, and Managers on research skills and helps to frame nonprofit tax issues for analysis.
- Frames projects and issues for effective delegation to Nonprofit Tax Associates and Senior Associates.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics OR Bachelor’s degree in any other focus area and a CPA certification, required.
- Master’s degree in Accountancy or Taxation, preferred.
- Eight (8) or more years of nonprofit tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience, required.
- Supervisory experience, required.
- CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (EA) (or equivalent), required.
- Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role, preferred.
- Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite, required.
