Overview

A food manufacturing company in Kalamazoo is looking for an Instrumentation Technician to join their growing team. This is a Direct Hire position on 1st shift with hours from 7am-3pm in a union environment.

Responsibilities
  • Perform calibrations and troubleshoot plant instrumentation and systems.
  • Diagnose and repair instrument and PLC control circuits independently, based on sound failure analysis before equipment replacement.
  • Identify and research appropriate replacement parts and components using manuals, web resources, and vendor consultation.
  • Archive and retrieve technical documentation; revise and update drawings and procedures as necessary.
  • Interpret and apply plant procedures related to instrumentation work.
  • Maintain training compliance for the Instrument Technician role.
  • Utilize the facility’s CMMS system to access work orders, documentation, and maintenance records.
  • Operate test equipment accurately to troubleshoot, repair, and calibrate various plant instruments.
  • Coordinate with other departments for effective scheduling and execution of repairs.
  • Ensure quality assurance, food defense, and safety policies are applied to all tasks.
  • Adhere to all applicable OSHA and state safety standards.
  • Exhibit leadership in safety practices and system reliability.
Technical Scope of Work
  • Instruments operating at 120

    VAC or below
  • Loop checks and support for engineering project commissioning
  • Repair of alarm and interlock systems (audible/visual alarms)
  • Pneumatic line and connection modifications
  • Work with HMI, PLC, and computer-based control systems
  • Install, calibrate, and maintain a wide range of instrumentation:
  • pH/ORP systems
  • Gas detection (fixed and portable)
  • Temperature: transmitters, switches, controllers
  • Pressure: indicators, switches, transmitters, process controllers
  • Level: radar, ultrasonic, DP, displacement, switches
  • Flow:
    Coriolis, magnetic, vortex, thermal, mechanical meters
  • Weighing systems: floor, benchtop, tank, lab scales
  • Valve systems, solenoids, actuators, converters, transducers
Education & Experience

Required:

  • ISA CSST Level I certification or completion of a certified instrumentation apprenticeship (or willingness to obtain certification within 1 year).
  • Hands-on experience with instrumentation including transmitters, gauges, sensors, and control devices.
  • Ability to calibrate and troubleshoot instrumentation systems.
  • Familiarity with P&IDs, schematics, loop diagrams, and electrical drawings.
  • Strong knowledge of instrumentation theory and process variables (pressure, flow, temperature, level).

Preferred:

  • 5+ years of experience in calibration and instrumentation troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with documentation practices and CMMS systems.
  • Experience working in hazardous classified areas and with intrinsically safe equipment.
  • Basic understanding of Arc Flash, Process Safety Management (PSM), and food safety requirements.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA/MIOSHA safety standards, including Lockout/Tagout.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and email systems.
Physical & Work Environment
  • Able to work in areas with varying heat, noise, and odors, including confined spaces and elevated locations.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Must frequently sit, stand, bend, kneel, or climb ladders.
  • Ability to wear required PPE, including respirators.
  • Must meet requirements to enter contained spaces.
Other Requirements
  • Occasional travel may be required.
  • Participation in food safety training and compliance with food safety procedures is mandatory.
