Overview

The Registered Nurse First Assistant is a Registered Nurse. The practice of professional nursing is the systematic application of specialized knowledge and skill, derived from biological, physical and behavioral sciences to care, treat, counsel and health teaching of individuals who are experiencing changes in normal health processes or who require assistance in the maintenance of health and the prevention or management of illness, injury or disability.

This role demonstrates the Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice and Standards of Professional Performance defined by the American Nurses Association. It recognizes each patient as a unique individual with the right to quality nursing care and protects patient rights and privacy. The nursing process facilitates the promotion, maintenance and restoration of health and incorporates knowledge of growth and development through the life span.

The nurse is knowledgeable of nursing practice, procedures, competencies and patient care standards as well as regulations and guidelines pertaining to nursing care. Successful completion of competency-based orientation and maintenance of core competencies for RNFA.

  • The scope of nursing practice includes teaching, directing and supervising less skilled personnel in the performance of delegated nursing activities. May delegate acts, tasks or functions and bears responsibility for the acts, tasks or functions within the scope of delegation.
  • Accountable to ethical and professional standards as defined by the ANA, the ANA Nursing Social Policy Statement, the State of Michigan Public Health Code and the ANA and AORN Standards of Clinical Practice. Adheres to standards set by regulatory agencies such as the Joint Commission, Conditions of Participation, Health Care Financial Administration and Michigan Occupational Health and Safety (MOSHA).
  • Accountabilities require individual competence in nursing practice and responsible action and judgment.
Organizational Responsibilities
  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department-specific education within established time frames.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established time frames.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers maintain current BLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Uses universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance; complies with organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime or additional shifts when required.

Licensure / Certification / Registration
  • Required Credential(s):
  • BLS Provider credentialed from the American Heart Association (AHA) obtained within 1 Month (30 days) of hire date or job transfer date.
  • Licensed Registered Nurse obtained within 3 Months (90 days) of hire date or job transfer date.
Education
  • The Registered Nurse must have an Associate of Applied Science in Nursing (AAS) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or RN Diploma at start date. Incumbents hired into position prior to 1/1/2015 are grandfathered with their existing degrees. Must be proficient in perioperative nursing as a scrub/circulator for a minimum of four (4) years. Consideration regarding length of training will be given to R NFA candidates.

    One (1) year of continuous employment at LHM.
