Heavy Duty Mechanic - Job Classification 1A
Road Commission of Kalamazoo County (RCKC) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Heavy Duty Mechanic - Job Classification 1A. As a Mechanic for the RCKC, you would perform a variety of skilled repair, maintenance, and fabrication of RCKC fleet and equipment.
HOURLY RANGE:
- $32.04 (Non-Exempt) + Up to $2.60/hour upon successful completion of additional certifications.

SCHEDULE:
- Regular Schedule
:
Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM with potential for overtime. - Summer schedule
:
Monday through Thursday, 6:30 AM to 5:00 PM with potential for overtime (subject to change). Hours may vary and subject to call 24 hours a day for emergency and/or weather conditions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Perform heavy and light duty truck/car diagnostics, repair, and preventative maintenance.
- Locate sources of problems by observing mechanical devices in operations, listening for problems, examining precision measuring and testing instruments.
- Remove defective parts by dismantling devices.
- Use welding to fabricate repair parts by using machine shop instruments and equipment.
- Track and record accurate records of time and materials used for each work project.
- Understand and be responsible for inventory control (data entry, bar code system).
- Construction/Maintenance equipment diagnostics, repair, and preventative maintenance.
- Hydraulic and electrical repair and diagnostics.
- Makes service calls in the field; returns vehicles to the garage for repair or otherwise assists malfunctioning equipment.
- Conserves maintenance resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
- Review completed Daily Vehicle Condition Report (DVCR) detailing condition of equipment/vehicles.
- Provide mechanical maintenance information/reports by answering questions and collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.
- Abide by all RCKC Safety Manual and Safety regulations as applicable.
EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS:
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- Industry certifications or automotive/equipment service technician or mechanic.
- A valid Commercial Driver License, Group A or Group B with air brake endorsement.
- Two (2) years of experience as an auto/truck mechanic, including the repair of both diesel and gas motors, drive trains, hydraulics, body work, welding, fabricating, etc., and customer service.
