DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Reviews third party resources used in Open Learning distance and online courses and by campus faculty in their courses in order to obtain licenses and permissions.
  • Negotiates terms of licenses and permissions with publishers, authors, artists, web-site administrators and other creators of educational resources to confirm terms of use of third party materials within course content.
  • Prepares payment requests and carries out financial transactions related to obtaining licenses.
  • Updates departmental databases to reflect clearance status of third party resources used in course content.
  • Supports compliance with policies and guidelines related to third party material use by a Canadian post-secondary institution.
  • Uses discretion as to when a matter should be escalated to the Supervisor of Editing and Copyright.
  • Recommends optimal alternate sources of third party copyrighted materials, communicating with academic staff as required.
  • Participates in planning workshops, seminars and events related to copyright offered to faculty, staff and students at TRU.
  • Maintains and updates relevant procedures manuals.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    EDUCATION:

    • Grade 12 plus six months of post-secondary education

    EXPERIENCE:

    • Three years of related experience including:
      • Three years with electronic word processing and data entry
      • Three years of experience related to intellectual property administration (copyright or trademark administration)

    SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE OR ABILITIES RELATED TO THE JOB

    • Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with faculty, staff, students and external stakeholders
    • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
    • General knowledge and understanding of copyright law and practices related to the post-secondary educational environment, both in the
    • Demonstrated ability to initiate and complete tasks independently with minimal direction and supervision; analyze and resolve issues; originate own work; and manage workload with changing priorities and periodic interruptions
    • Demonstrated intermediate skills using Word and Excel
    • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and attend to fine details with accuracy and thoroughness
    • Demonstrated ability to organize and maintain files and databases, including use of a diarized system
    • Experience searching for information on the Internet and through library search systems

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    • Long periods of time working at computer
    • Periodic lifting of documents, not exceeding 5 kg.

    The salary for the above position is determined by the Collective Agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 4879, as it presently exists.
