Role
SMJV are recruiting for a field-based Project Controls Lead to work on large‑scale and exciting large‑diameter gas pipeline construction projects.
The Project Controls Lead is responsible for effectively managing all project controls functions on a construction project, and where required, leading a team of project controls professionals. The Lead must positively influence internal and external clients to achieve results, achieve a high level of forecasting accuracy, and proactively address project issues to support a successful construction project outcome.
Key Responsibilities- Assist with the preparation and maintenance of project schedule using the project controls system (company templates and historical records).
- Assist the Commercial Manager and Project Manager with setup, documentation and change administration.
- Collect and compile project data to track progress, earned value and monitor trends, including physical progress, project cost codes, man‑hours reported and project subcontractors.
- Work with the Project Manager to establish a cost reporting system for all project components, including process pipe fabrications, field installation, structural steel fabrication, underground piping and civil work.
- Assist the Commercial Manager and Project Manager to analyze cost and schedule trends, develop and review cost and schedule forecasts.
- Review and contribute to the schedule with the assistance of the Project Manager; monitor schedules on a regular basis, identify the critical path and monitor manpower loading to keep project controls status updated.
- Maintain a changelog register, control site instructions, change order requests and change orders.
- Attend all regular meetings as required by the Project Manager.
- Develop progress invoicing and progress status reports.
- Oversee and manage invoicing process and billing reconciliations.
- Respond to internal and external audit queries.
- Provide support to the Project Manager to complete change‑order estimates, review estimates and assist in costing.
- Prepare Project Control Reports as required by the Project Manager and client, including monthly, bi‑weekly, weekly reports, schedule issuance and analysis, subcontract progress status, earned value curves, productivity analysis, histograms and slippage reporting/recovery planning.
- Highlight risk warnings when identified (task completion dates, cost deviation, activity slippage, critical path analysis).
- Act as liaison between Project Controls and other project disciplines.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements on projects.
- Contribute to the production and maintenance of a Level 4 schedule with inputs from multiple crews and contractors.
- Create daily and weekly cost reports and forecast costs to completion, utilizing progress data from the field.
- Perform daily administrative duties, such as daily input of employee time, creation and maintenance of WBS/CBS in the accounting system, maintenance of equipment and change‑order logs, analysis of purchase orders and correct coding, invoice preparation, etc.
- Support subcontract management.
- Provide direct financial communication with the owner, subcontractors, internal finance department and project team.
- Provide support and guidance to field payroll and accounts payable functions.
In addition to these duties, personnel are required to carry out such other duties as may be reasonably required in order to support the objectives of the company.
Position Requirements Qualifications- High School Diploma.
- Engineering or commercial degree, or graduate of an applicable technical diploma program, and/or a combination of education and relevant experience.
- Project Management Institute (PMI) certification.
- 6 – 10 years of experience in an oil and gas construction project, management or project controls role (preferably in the field).
- Note – experience in other industries will be considered if skills are demonstrated as transferable.
- Understanding of the oil and gas industry (preferably pipeline construction).
