Position: Assistant Lead Carpenter (Lead Hand)
Location: Chase

Reporting to the Construction Manager, the Assistant Lead Carpenter (Lead Hand) is responsible for supporting the day-to-day coordination and organization of housing construction and renovation sites. The position provides a consistent field presence across active projects, ensuring crews are organized, work areas are safe and productive, required materials and equipment are available, and work is progressing in accordance with the direction and schedule established by the Construction Manager.

The Assistant Lead Carpenter (Lead Hand) provides hands-on carpentry support as required and acts as the primary link between field crews and the Construction Manager.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Adams Lake Indian Band policies, procedures, safety requirements and established construction practices.
  • Conduct regular check-ins at active housing construction and renovation sites and maintain a consistent field presence across assigned projects.
  • Coordinate daily field activities based on priorities, schedules and direction established by the Construction Manager.
  • Ensure crews understand daily work assignments, expected timelines, project priorities and site-specific requirements.
  • Monitor site progress and provide regular updates to the Construction Manager, including delays, deficiencies, material shortages, safety concerns or other issues affecting project completion.
  • Maintain organized, clean and safe construction sites, including appropriate storage and control of materials, tools and equipment.
  • Confirm required materials, tools and equipment are available prior to scheduled work and communicate upcoming requirements to the Construction Manager.
  • Coordinate day-to-day sequencing between carpentry crews and other trades as directed by the Construction Manager.
  • Provide hands-on carpentry support as required, including framing, drywall, finishing, flooring, cabinetry, exterior repairs and renovation work.
  • Provide field direction, mentorship and hands-on instruction to apprentices, junior workers, students and community members in training.
  • Monitor workmanship and identify deficiencies requiring correction before work progresses to the next stage.
  • Support site assessments and assist the Construction Manager in identifying labour, material, equipment and scheduling requirements.
  • Ensure established safety procedures, WorkSafeBC requirements and ALIB policies are followed on all assigned sites.
  • Maintain clear communication with the Construction Manager regarding crew attendance, productivity, site conditions, project progress and emerging concerns.
  • Assist with receiving, verifying and organizing construction materials and deliveries against project requirements.
  • Participate in construction planning, safety and progress meetings as required.
  • Support documentation and certification of apprentice hours where authorized and qualified.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS
  • Red Seal Carpenter certification preferred; an equivalent combination of construction experience, training and demonstrated field leadership may be considered.
  • Several years of progressively responsible experience in residential construction, renovations or a related construction environment.
  • Demonstrated experience providing day-to-day field leadership, crew coordination or lead-hand responsibilities.
  • Training in BC First Aid is an asset.
  • Construction trade certification and relevant WorkSafeBC or safety training are assets.
  • Experience working in a First Nations environment is an asset.
  • Experience working with Indigenous youth, apprentices or community training initiatives is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of the BC Building Code and applicable construction standards.
  • Ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications and work plans.
  • Strong site organization, time-management and prioritization skills.
  • Strong supervisory, mentoring and team leadership skills.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to identify problems early, communicate concerns clearly and support practical solutions.
  • Diplomacy, tact and confidentiality when working with community members, staff, contractors and other stakeholders.
  • Flexibility and ability to adapt to changing work priorities and multiple active job sites.
  • Sound judgement, reliability and accountability in a field-based leadership role.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Lead Hand provides day-to-day field direction to carpenters, apprentices, trainees, students and other workers assigned to Housing construction projects. The position coordinates daily work activities, provides instruction and mentorship, monitors site organization and workmanship, and communicates field progress and concerns to the Construction Manager.
