Full-time Principal position the George Manuel Institute (Gr.9-12) at Neskonlith (Chase), British Columbia.

The Neskonlith Indian Band is currently seeking a dedicated, energetic, experienced, and organized Principal to join our hard-working Department of Education team. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with our school team to deliver high-quality education to our nation’s youth, helping prepare them for life after grade 12 and supporting a variety of post-secondary pathways. Job Summary:

The principal is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the educational facility, ensuring that school policies, regulations, and procedures are observed and that all students are supervised in a safe and welcoming learning environment. He or she will work with all school staff to provide leadership regarding the school’s curriculum, financial and procedural administration, scheduling, extracurricular activities, emergency operations, facilities management, and management of conduct and discipline.

The principal will also serve as a role model and assist staff and students in achieving an optimal educational experience. Other duties will be assigned as required.

Overall principal responsibilities include:

Setting performance objectives for students and teachers. Implementing and monitoring school policies and safety protocols. Overseeing administrative tasks.

Developing instructional programs to improve overall student and teacher performance. Meeting with parents to discuss concerns about students. Implementing a curriculum for academic success while maintaining compliance with government guidelines. Creating goals and benchmarks for students and teachers to track progress. Coordinating schedules for staff to optimize efficiency and workplace satisfaction.

Job Duties:

Academic Functions:

Monitor instructional and managerial processes to ensure that program activities align with program outcomes and use findings to take corrective action. Regularly consult with the campus-level committee about planning, operation, supervision, and evaluation of the campus education program. Include students and community representatives when appropriate. Maintain and promote high standards for all staff and students regarding academic performance, personal growth, responsibility, and character.

Manage, evaluate, and supervise procedures, operations, curricula, extracurricular activities, and discipline to ensure a safe and welcoming learning environment.

School Morale:

Provide instructional resources and materials to support teaching staff in accomplishing instructional goals. Foster collegiality and team building among staff members. Encourage their active involvement in the decision-making process. Ensure two-way communication with staff, students, parents, and the community. Communicate and promote expectations for high-level performance to staff and students. Recognize excellence and achievement. Ensure the effective and prompt resolution of conflicts.

Display highly ethical, professional behaviour, serving as a role model to all staff and students.

School Improvement:

Build a common vision for school improvement with staff that reflects the values of the Neskonlith community and align with First Nations pedagogy. Direct planning activities and implement programs with staff to ensure the schools mission is achieved. Develop and set annual campus performance objectives. Develop, maintain, and use information systems and records necessary to track campus progress on performance objectives.

Establish and maintain an orderly learning environment that instills accountability and ensures high morale among staff and students.

Personnel Management:

Interview, select, and orient new staff. Define expectations for staff performance regarding instructional strategies, classroom management, and public communication. Observe employee performance, record observations, and conduct evaluation conferences with staff. Make recommendations to the Director on the termination, suspension, or non-renewal of employees assigned to the school. Confer with subordinates regarding their professional growth. Work with them to develop and accomplish improvement goals.

Student

Management:

Work with faculty and students to develop a student discipline management system that improves student behavior and enhances the school climate. Notify appropriate authorities if evidence of child abuse, child neglect, severe medical conditions, student self-harm, or student substance abuse is found. Ensure that school rules are uniformly observed and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable in accordance with the Code of Conduct and student handbook.
