POSITION SUMMARY
The Special Education Assistant provides direct support to students with diverse learning needs to promote academic success, independence, and social development. The role involves working one‑on‑one with students, assisting with small group instruction, supporting individualized educational plans, and helping maintain a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment. Support activities may include classroom assistance, supervision, cultural learning activities, land‑based education, physical activity programming, and therapeutic support initiatives.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Student Support & Classroom Assistance
Provide one‑to‑one support to identified students under the direction of the Learning Assistance Teacher.
Supervise and support small learning groups.
Assist students with academic tasks to promote engagement and achievement.
Prepare classroom materials and assist with individualized education programs.
Maintain awareness of student health, safety, and special needs requirements.
Assist with classroom management while recognizing that disciplinary measures are administered by the Teacher and/or Principal.
Supervision & Safety
Supervise students during classroom activities, field trips, recess, noon hour, and before/after school.
Support safe learning environments and follow all school safety procedures.
Be familiar with emergency procedures, including safe exit protocols.
Educational Program Support
Assist the Learning Assistance Teacher in assessing student development and progress.
Help implement Individual Educational Plans (IEPs).
Maintain records and data tracking related to student progress.
Provide regular progress updates and written reports when required.
Team & School Support Responsibilities
Participate in school team meetings and collaborative planning sessions.
Assist with incorporating recommendations from specialists, therapists, and external professionals.
Support activities within the Learning Assistance Room.
Participate in professional development and training familiar with the school’s vision, strategic goals, and policies.
Support cultural programming, language learning, and land‑based education activities.
Maintain confidentiality regarding student and school information.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
Ability to assist students with mobility and physical needs.
Ability to perform light lifting (up to 25 lbs).
Ability to supervise students outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Ability to manage situations involving behavioural or emotional challenges.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Understanding of child development and educational programming.
Knowledge of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and classroom support practices.
Strong organizational and teamwork skills.
Ability to serve as a positive role model for students.
Computer literacy and record-keeping ability.
QUALIFICATIONS
Completion of Grade 12 Diploma.
Education Assistant Certificate, Early Childhood Education (ECE), or related post‑secondary training in Special Education preferre.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
Successful completion of Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.
First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain).
Knowledge of Nlaka’pamux language and culture is considered an asset..
