Purpose of Position:
The Language and Culture Department Manager will oversee all program management and financial administration and negotiating on behalf of the Tkek Yeel Stem Camp, while the Camp Coordinator will oversee the Tkek Yeel Stem Camp programs and services. The Camp Coordinator provides leadership and guidance to the staff who will help develop and implement the summer camp’s long and short-term goals and objectives.
The Camp Coordinator will work with the Language and Culture Department Manager and staff, and other internal staff in hosting various summer camp programs and services. This position will work with external partners as well.
Duties and Responsibilities The Tkek Yeel Stem Camp Coordinator oversees the planning, development and implementation of the summer camp programs and services, including planning and implementing inter-generational teachings of language, history and culture. The incumbent, along with the camp staff, will operate the summer camp program in accordance with the approved TteS Administration Procedures, Finance Administration Law, HR Employee Policy and Procedures Manual, and laws and legislation governing the care of children and youth.
Strategic leadership: provide leadership and guide the Tkek Yeel Stem staff in planning, development and implementation of the summer camp programs and services; continually review and update the Camp Policies and Procedure Handbook to meet goals and objectives.
Researches and monitors applicable summer youth camp policies to ensure compliance with laws and legislation; make recommendations to the Language and Culture Department Manager.
Serve as a liaison between the Language and Culture Department Manager and staff, TteS community members, Chief and Council, and external agencies as needed.
Promote the Tkek Yeels Stem Camp and ensure TteS members are given priority in all programs and services.
Hire consultants/contractors as needed and submit receipts or invoices in a timely manner.
Hire Traditional Knowledge Keepers and Elders to teach language, history and culture; submit cheque requisitions timely and ensure camp staff supervise children during programs.
Manage all accounts payable and receivable and maintain accurate accounting records.
Maintain excellent working relationships with TteS members and LC/CSD and accounting staff.
Human Resources and Administration Ensure the camp staff uphold the TteS Employment Policy and Procedures Manual.
Assist the Language and Culture Department Manager in hiring camp staff when necessary.
Host staff training sessions (e.g., first aid, bear aware, canoeing, water safety).
Provide professional and technical staff support and coaching as needed.
Community Relations Promote and create opportunities for intergenerational teaching at the Tkek Yeel Stem summer camp.
Utilize the LC department list of Elders/Traditional Knowledge Keepers to teach the children and youth.
Utilize lists of TteS artists, drummers, singers, regalia makers, videographers, photographers, and other contributors to teach and engage participants.
Collaborate with the Community Services Department to host gatherings and support intergenerational teachings.
Develop and distribute posters advertising the summer camp and weekly calendar.
Invite SFU language program students and instructors to participate and teach.
Budget and Supervision Oversee the Tkek Yeel Stem budget and supervise staff as required.
Qualifications and Requirements Knowledgeable of Secwépemc language, history and culture
Social work certificate, education aide certificate or similar post-secondary education
Language proficiency certificate (asset)
First aid and Transportation certificates
Lifeguard certificate (asset)
Basic computer certificate
Proven ability to work with children and youth
Minimum two years in a supervisory role, especially in an Indigenous organization
Criminal Record Check – Vulnerable Sector (to be provided and kept up to date)
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Supervisory and interpersonal skills
Problem solving and critical thinking
Computer literacy
Hours and Compensation HOURS OF WORK: Normal day shifts – 7 hours. Non-normal shifts may be required.
PAY GRADE: Starting at $25.98 - $28.70/hour depending on education & experience
