REPORTS TO
Associate University Librarian
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION:
- Undergraduate degree in a related field from a recognized post-secondary institution
- A two (2) year Library and Information Technology Diploma, reflecting the competencies as outlined in the CFLA Guidelines for Education of Library Technicians(2022) (available at: ;
EXPERIENCE:
- Three years’ experience work as a library technician
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE OR ABILITIES RELATED TO THE JOB
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with ability to show empathy in difficult situations
- Ability to organize and coordinate a shared schedule
- Ability to effectively organize and coordinate staff training
- Ability to use policies and procedures to problem solve day-to-day issues
- Ability to plan, organize and prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and maintain accuracy and quality of work
- Ability to work collegially with faculty librarians, library technicians and staff, and library administrators to improve library public services
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to use and troubleshoot basic equipment such as computer printers, multifunctional devices, point of sale machines, and library equipment such as microform readers, label printers, and self-checkout machines
- Ability to use, demonstrate, and troubleshoot specialized equipment such as 3D printers, recording equipment, digital cameras, VR systems, textile machines, mobile devices, or educational robots
- Ability to work well under pressure and deal courteously, tactfully, and discretely with a variety of people
- Commitment to maintaining currency with library technologies, and ongoing professional development and training, in relation to assigned work responsibilities
- Ability to use and demonstrate a wide variety of software programs and platforms such as integrated library systems, library research databases, learning management systems, web editors, social media, basic survey tools, and scheduling tools
- Intermediate computer skills with Microsoft Office Suite products, including Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Demonstrated ability to perform electronic work processing and data entry in an enterprise relational database, , integrated library system
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Sitting at a desk working on a computer for long periods of time, and standing for long periods of time
- Moving between floors and campus buildings while transporting library materials on a regular basis
- Shelving and shifting books, moving book trucks, and lifting boxes or other material up to 15 kg
- Maintaining cleanliness of computers and equipment
- Working closely with the public in a constantly changing environment
- May require night and/or weekend shifts
The salary for the above position is determined by the Collective Agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 4879, as it presently exists.
