About Highland Valley Copper (HVC) Operations is Canada's largest open-pit copper mine and molybdenum operation. HVC produces both copper and molybdenum concentrate through autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding and flotation. Located approximately 17 kilometers west of Logan Lake and about 50 kilometers southwest of Kamloops in British Columbia, the surrounding areas of HVC have an abundant offering of outdoor experiences.

Role Overview

For this exciting position, we are specifically targeting students who have a background in civil engineering. The successful candidate must possess outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect with individuals of a diverse set of backgrounds. If you are not currently located in the area of this co-op position, you must be willing to either commute or relocate to the surrounding area for the entire duration of the co-op term.

You must also currently be a student enrolled in a Canadian post-secondary institution and will be enrolled throughout the duration of the co-op term (you will also be returning back to the post-secondary institution once the co-op term is completed). Proof of a valid work permit will also be required, if applicable.

Key Responsibilities
  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Participate in the health and safety programs of Teck to ensure that everyone on site goes home safe and healthy every day
  • Update data systems and prepare internal communication
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to build and use detailed designs for civil projects on site
  • Assist with coordinating civil projects on active mine sites and organize, schedule and control the cost of projects, providing status reports on progress
  • Prepare quantity take-off and cost analysis
  • Planning, scheduling and managing construction contractors and monitoring progress
  • Create and evaluate innovative ideas and technologies to help improve the way we do business
Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic work environment with a willingness to work outdoors and able to operate vehicles in various weather conditions and terrain
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills with a capability to communicate complex ideas to all levels
  • Previous work experience in a technical or engineering environment is an asset
  • Experience with form design, macros and data analysis is an asset
  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite® of applications:
    Word, Excel, Power Point, and Access
  • Experience with AutoCAD and Civil3D would be an asset
  • Able to work efficiently, independently and part of the team
  • Proven ability to learn innovative technologies and platforms quickly, accurately and efficiently
  • Ability to communicate with precision in a technical environment
  • Able to articulate sophisticated concepts clearly and in a way a diverse audience would understand

All students will be required to complete pre-employment drug testing prior to commencing work.

The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate's relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
