Description
The Town of Golden is seeking an experienced Automotive Technician with demonstrated heavy equipment operating skills to join our team. This newly created position offers an exciting opportunity to apply your mechanical expertise and operational knowledge in a dynamic municipal environment.
This is a unionized position within CUPE Local 2309 with a starting wage of $43.75/hour and an excellent benefits package.
About the RoleThe successful candidate will plan and lead the ongoing maintenance of all light vehicles owned and operated by the municipality, including light trucks and cars powered by diesel, gasoline, or hybrid systems. These vehicles may be computer‑controlled and include hydraulic power systems. The role also includes maintenance of small engine equipment such as compactors, mowers, weed whips, chain saws, and generators.
As a relief equipment operator, the position may assist the equipment operations team with duties such as swamping for the vacuum/jet‑rodding truck, operating loaders, winter plow trucks, bucket trucks, and assisting with crane truck operations.
Work may occur remotely at jobsites for repairs or equipment retrieval and will include outdoor work in all weather conditions. Participation in the after‑hours call‑out standby rotation is required.
- Perform inspections, diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on a variety of light vehicles (gas, diesel, hybrid).
- Diagnose complex mechanical, electrical, and drivability issues; conduct safety inspections.
- Provide clear recommendations to the Operations Manager on repair priorities, workload planning, work‑system improvements, and mechanical.
- Maintain accurate service records, documentation, and compliance files.
- Ensure a clean, organized, and safe workspace; support a positive team culture.
- Perform other automotive technician duties as assigned.
Relief Equipment Operator (as needed)
- Complete daily pre‑ and post‑use equipment inspections and forms.
- Wash, clean, and perform minor service (e.g., fluids, brake adjustments, bulb replacements).
- Conduct swamping duties with the vacuum/jet‑rodding truck.
- Safely operate heavy equipment: all‑season loader, backhoe, excavator, and skid‑steer.
- Operate winter plow truck and bucket truck; assist with crane truck operations.
- Follow Work Safe and Town safe‑work procedures; exercise sound judgment and prioritize public and co‑worker safety.
- Perform other relief equipment operator duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Grade 12 or equivalent GED.
- BC Class 3 driver’s license with Air Brake endorsement.
- Minimum 100 hours of training on rubber‑tire loaders and single‑axle 5‑ton trucks with air brakes.
- Basic First Aid and WHMIS.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience as a journeyman automotive technician.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in effective use of hand tools, power tools, and welding equipment.
- Minimum 6 months’ experience in the operation of heavy mobile equipment including rubber tire loaders and single axle 5‑ton trucks with air brakes.
The Automotive Technician & Relief Equipment Operator is directly supervised by and reports to the Manager of Operations or designate.
