Position: Type 2 Wildfire Crew Leader

Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc (TteS) is a fast-growing vibrant organization committed to the development and progress of its Band Members and Community. As such, the TteS invites applications from qualified, highly motivated and dynamic individuals to fill the following position.

POSITION TITLE:
Type 2 Wildfire Crew Leader / Forestry Crew Leader

DEPARTMENT:
Wildfire Crew / Fuel Management - Emergency Preparedness Program

TERMS:
Full Time, Term until March 31, 2027 with chance of extension.

Purpose of Position:

This position ensures the TteS Forestry Crew deploys and operates safely, efficiently, and effectively, upholding the highest safety standards in forestry and wildfire operations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Forestry Crew Leader / Type 2 Wildfire Crew Leader is accountable for:

  • Leading the four person Forestry and Wildfire Crew and promoting and fostering an efficient, effective, collaborative, professional, and safety-forward team
  • Maintaining crew and job site safety, upholding the highest safety standards in forestry and wildfire operations
  • Ensuring crew member certifications are up to date
  • Gathering critical information pertinent to daily assignments
  • Directing and supervising crew on and off the fireline
  • Participating in BCWS training and coordination calls
  • Ensuring wildfire crew and crew member readiness
  • Working alongside and/or taking direction from both BCWS and Ryder Venture crews and personnel
  • Working collaboratively with BCWS, contract crews, and other community partners
  • Leading the forestry crew in fuel management, wildfire mitigation project work, as well as other department and external partner projects (e.g., TteS firewood delivery program and Fire Smart initiatives)
  • Participating in emergency prevention, mitigation, preparedness, and response, and recovery activities
  • Participating in wildfire prevention and response community education and awareness events
  • Ensuring administrative documents including site safety plans, safety reports, training records, crew member competency evaluations, project update reports, as well as employee timesheets are up-to-date and completed in a timely manner
  • Deploying as a Type 3 Crew for wildfire operations including structure protection, mop-up, and patrol
  • Ensuring quick, efficient, and effective wildfire response in accordance with the BCWS Indigenous Initial Response Crew (IIRC) standards
  • Determining safe, efficient, and effective fire suppression methods and techniques to be utilized
  • Communicating with internal and external resources on assignments in a timely manner
  • Maintaining crew safe work policies and professional conduct at all times
  • Maintaining full availability for wildfire response (standby and overtime) from May to September, limiting personal leave to essential situations only.
Professional Certification,

Education and Experience:

Certifications:
  • Must hold a valid BC Class 7 (N) driver’s license and be willing to work toward obtaining a full Class 5 driver’s license within a specified timeframe
  • Work Safe recognized Basic First Aid Certificate (formerly OFA Level
    1) and Transportation Endorsement
  • S-100 Basic Fire Suppression and Safety or equivalent (Annual Re-currency)
  • WHMIS & TDG Certified
  • Acceptable Criminal Record Check
Education:

Experience:
  • Acted as a Wildfire Crew Leader on three (3) fires OR has thirty five (35) days as a Wildland Firefighter (minimum of 420 hours required)
  • Ensuring forestry projects and wildfire response operations are carried out in a financially responsible manner, with all associated financial documentation completed accurately and on time.
Supervision or Training Duties:
  • Responsible for supervising a 3 - 4 person Type 2 wildfire crew
  • Participate in all operational job required training courses
  • Maintain certifications required for this position
Skills and Abilities:
  • Physically fit and capable of physical labour
  • Capable of navigating rugged terrain in adverse conditions
  • Able to carry heavy object (50 lbs) long distances over difficult terrain
  • Safety conscious
  • Team oriented - works well with others
  • Strong leadership skills including:
    • Building a positive team environment
    • Directing and supervising personnel
