Purpose
Reporting to the Manager, Rail Operations, the Locomotive Engineer (Switch Crew) is an integral team member of the company’s Operations and Mechanical team. The Locomotive Engineer/Switch person will be mainly responsible for the safe movement of passenger rail equipment located in the Kamloops yard. The Locomotive Engineer/Switch person will also be responsible for mainline rescues on both CN and CPKC territory when required.
This position is deemed Safety critically and pre‑employment testing will be required. Final candidates must successfully pass a safety critical medical exam and will undergo medical monitoring as prescribed by Transport Canada.
Key Areas of Accountability
Responsibilities
- Move passenger rail equipment between maintenance locations, stations, and adjoining mainlines
- As required, perform switching of passenger rail equipment as per instructions to change locomotive and rail car placements
- Operate and service rail equipment including handbrakes, air hoses, disconnect/connect HEP cables and water lines, operate track switches and derails
- Comply with all Canadian Railway Operating Rules, General Operating Instructions and applicable safety rules
- Ensure compliance with all train orders, signals, railroad rules, and regulations related to safety and operations
- Provide and receive various forms of oral and printed instructions concerning the movement and placement of rail cars
- Cross reference verbal and printed instructions to ensure the accurate placement of rail cars on trains and in the yard
- Observe, interpret, and relay signals as per rules
- Communicate effectively with Rail Traffic Control, other train crews, and other departments via radio
Safety
- Comply with Canadian Railway Operating Rules (CROR), General Operating Instructions (GOI), Federal Railroad Association (FRA), and all other safety policies, procedures, and rules
- Identify, protect, and report safety hazards to management and OH&S Committee
- Meet or exceed safety and security requirements
- Maintain basic first aid level provided by Rocky Mountaineer
Operations
- Support the successful execution of the Operating Plan
- Support movements of RM trains & rail equipment
- Support the company’s materials handling strategy
Qualifications
Education, Certification, Licenses
- Qualified as a Conductor and/or Locomotive Engineer
- First Aid OFA Level 1; is an asset
- Valid Class 5 BC Drivers License
Experience & Skills
- Experience in operating locomotives, switching passenger and/or freight equipment
- Experience operating locomotives in 105 NMT territory as well as on the mainline
- Experience with building and interpreting switch lists
- Background in mechanical equipment maintenance, an asset
- Strong leadership and communication skills
- Background in rail car maintenance, an asset
- High attention to detail
- Routinely climb ladders or vestibule steps to board standing or moving equipment
- Occasional travel may be required
- Physical demands may require lifting upto 50 lbs. on occasion
- Rail industrial site that requires walking on unlevel ground (bellist) and or sitting throughout the day
