The Job
CNN Newsource is modernizing the core platform used by hundreds of partner newsrooms to access, publish, and distribute CNN content. As a Staff Engineer, you will help define the technical direction of this next-generation platform. You will work across frontend and backend systems, influence architecture across teams, and provide leadership to ensure that the platform is performant, resilient, and easy for newsrooms to use.
You will partner closely with product, editorial, and engineering leadership to translate platform goals into technical strategy. This role requires deep technical experience, strong system design skills, and the ability to guide teams through complex decisions.
The Daily
You will lead the design and implementation of core platform services, APIs, and user-facing applications. You’ll mentor engineers, contribute to architecture reviews, and drive engineering standards across the organization. You will collaborate with cross-functional partners to evaluate tradeoffs, identify technical risks, and ensure solutions scale across CNN’s distribution ecosystem.
You will help shape the long-term platform roadmap, investigate new technologies, and drive improvements in reliability, performance, and developer experience. You will support production operations when needed, contribute to post-incident reviews, and ensure the platform continues to meet the high expectations of partner newsrooms.
The Essentials
8+ years of software engineering experience with increasing technical responsibility
Expertise with Node.js and modern JavaScript/Type Script
Deep experience building large-scale applications with React or Vue.js
Strong background in AWS systems design and distributed architectures
Strong system design, technical strategy, and architecture skills
Experience with Postgres, Redis/Dynamo
DB, caching patterns, and high-throughput APIs
Ability to lead technical discussions and align teams on clear technical direction
Strong communication skills and experience influencing cross-team decisions
Active use of AI-assisted development tools (Cursor, Codex, Claude, etc.) to improve velocity and code quality
Commitment to engineering excellence, performance optimization, and resilience
The Nice to Haves
Experience building newsroom tools, CMS platforms, or media workflows
Familiarity with edge compute, CDN routing, or content delivery architectures
Experience designing ingestion systems, video workflows, or content pipelines
Prior experience mentoring engineers or contributing to hiring processes
Contributions to open-source projects or internal platform tooling
Additional Information
On December 5, Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery announced they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Netflix will acquire Warner Bros., including its film and television studios, HBO Max and HBO. The transaction is expected to close after the separation of Warner Bros. Discovery's Global Networks division, Discovery Global, into a new publicly-traded company, which is expected to be completed in Q3 2026.
