Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB) Keaoa Loe REMS Lab Graduate Assistantship

HIMB, part of the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology, is seeking a Graduate Assistant (GA) to be part of the Keaoa Loe REMS Lab team on Moku o Loe in Kaneohe Bay, Oahu. The REMS Lab operates out of the Marine Science Research Learning Center at HIMB, a dedicated facility to educate and train Hawai‘i’s students in marine science research and scientific inquiry.

Duties

The primary duties are to support HIMB’s Research Experiences in Marine Science (REMS) suite of programs and related school and community education‑outreach activities ponsibilities include assisting with the delivery of the REMS Excel professional development series and developing the associated remote online workshop interface; providing administrative support for REMS and Science Inquiry Experience fieldtrip bookings and scheduling; mentoring student intern(s) in the REMS pathway;

supporting program website updates; coordinating REMS recruiting and application administration; following up with middle and early high school students regarding marine science pathway educational opportunities at HIMB/UH; general support and delivery of REMS and HIMB educational programs; and other related duties as assigned.

Applicants must be willing to learn to operate from small boats, snorkel and freedive, get certified in Lifeguarding, CPR, and First Aid if not already qualified, as well as adhere to required University of Hawai‘i policies (including the UH Minors Policy that requires an FBI background check and ISAT training) and associated UH Lab Safety training and Title IX requirements. Trainings will be facilitated or provided by UH/HIMB.

Workplaces include the MSRLC teaching lab‑classroom, in the field, on boats, in the water and outdoors.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Student enrolled in the Marine Biology Graduate Program with a bachelor’s degree in marine science, marine biology, or related field in good standing.
  • Demonstrated interest and experience in high school – early undergraduate/early college student teaching and mentoring in marine science.
  • At least 2 years of experience in independent marine science research.
  • Strong writing and data analysis skills necessary.
  • Knowledge of Hawaiian coral reef, algal or marine ecosystems.
  • Working knowledge of the research programs at HIMB.
  • Familiarity with UH and HIMB strategic priorities as they related to Hawaiian sense of place and place of learning.
  • Must be competent in the water (swimming, snorkeling) and comfortable doing field work in nearshore ecosystems from shore or from small boats.
  • Must be able to pass an FBI background check per UH Minors Policy and ISAT training for accessing student info with PII.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience developing marine science K‑12 lessons and/or activities and in marine science research, outreach and education.
  • Experience doing research/education in partnership with community organizations and non‑profits.
  • Qualifications in hand for diving, small boat operations, vessel crewing, life guarding, CPR/First aid, and laboratory, hazmat and biosafety and crew training for larger vessels (which includes USCG drug screenings).
