REGISTERED NURSE – LABOR AND DELIVERY (PT Days)

Riverside Healthcare in Kankakee, Illinois, is seeking a skilled and compassionate Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse (RN) to join our acute care team. The ideal candidate will provide exceptional patient care to expectant mothers and their newborns in a fast‑paced and supportive environment, working closely with obstetricians, pediatricians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure safe and positive childbirth experiences and manage both routine deliveries and emergency situations with competence and empathy.

The position requires flexibility with assignments within professional scope, duties, and licensure.

Essential Duties
  • Provide comprehensive nursing care to women before, during, and after labor, including monitoring maternal and fetal vital signs, administering medications, and assisting with epidurals.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to develop and implement individualized care plans for patients.
  • Provide emotional support and education to patients and families throughout the labor process.
  • Monitor labor progression using fetal monitoring devices and respond to any abnormalities or emergencies as necessary.
  • Assist in all aspects of labor, including preparing patients for delivery, guiding mothers through labor, and coaching during pushing.
  • Assist physicians with vaginal deliveries and Cesarean sections (C‑sections), including prepping the delivery room and ensuring sterile environments.
  • Provide immediate newborn care, including resuscitation and APGAR scoring, as needed.
  • Provide postpartum care to mothers and newborns, including administering medications, monitoring recovery, and facilitating skin‑to‑skin contact and breastfeeding support.
  • Educate patients and families about postpartum care, newborn care, and discharge instructions.
  • Respond to obstetric emergencies such as preeclampsia, hemorrhage, and fetal distress with prompt intervention.
  • Participate in Code OB, Code Blue, or other emergency protocols as necessary.
  • Maintain annual education requirements.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and continuing education opportunities.
  • Assist with maintaining cleanliness and inventory in the labor and delivery unit.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to nursing students or newly hired RNs as needed.
Non‑essential Duties

Preferred Experience

Minimum of one year of experience as an RN in Labor and Delivery, Mother/Baby, or Women’s Health preferred.

Required Licensure and Education
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
  • RN license in the state of IL required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification required (or willingness to obtain within 6 months).
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (PNR) Certification required (or willingness to obtain within 6 months).
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) Certification required (or willingness to obtain within 6 months).
  • New Graduate RNs starting on or after 1/1/25 must earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) within 3 years of start date.
Preferred Education
  • BSN preferred.
Compensation
  • Base compensation within the position’s pay range based on qualifications, skills, and experience.
  • Premium pay such as shift differential and on-call.
