Location: Primarily Main Campus or Pioneer Career Center, but any location assigned by the appropriate administrator.
Job Purpose
The Adult Education Instructor shall be responsible to the Assistant Adult Education Director and teach all subjects in adult education, as well as all aspects of adult education as required by the AEFLA, the KBOR, and KCKCC. The subjects include Math, Reading, Writing, Social Studies, Science, Technology, College and Workforce Preparation. Instruction will include adult students, 16 years of age and older, at all academic levels.
Position Description
- Teach and/or tutor all aspects of GED classes, including writing, math, reading, social studies, science, technology, and workforce skills to meet or exceed KBOR targets for the institution.
- Prepare students to achieve educational attainment, secure employment, retain/improve employment, transition to post-secondary, college readiness, citizenship skills, and other goals set forth by the program or KBOR.
- Utilize a variety of effective teaching strategies to engage and motivate adult learners, addressing various learning modalities, abilities, needs and interests through differentiated instruction to ensure progress toward learning goals.
- Advise with students during enrollment week and at a minimum every three weeks thereafter regarding test scores, goals, roadblocks, study resources, academic progress and other topics specific to individual students’ progress and document sessions appropriately.
- Administer assessments to students as necessary or set forth by PAM.
- Adapt instruction based on summative and formative assessments to prepare students to pass all GED exams.
- Communicate with absent students via phone or email and record communication on a shared contact log.
- Maintain and submit all necessary records for state and federal reports in a timely manner.
- Navigate and employ the use of the Adult Education Student Information System (AESIS).
- Engage in staff development activities with other adult education staff to enhance quality of instruction; earn the required minimum number of PD credits as set by KCKCC.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director/Director.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to create and implement lesson plans.
- Ability to create and maintain a student-centered classroom.
- Ability to demonstrate classroom management skills.
- Ability to work with multi-level adult learners.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office software, online resources, and classroom technology.
- Maintain strong math and English teaching skills.
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal and collaboration skills.
Position Qualifications and/or Education
Minimum Qualifications and/or Education
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in education, adult education, or related field.
- Training, experience, and/or coursework in individual learning methodology in basic academic skill areas including reading, writing, and mathematics to improve learner academic skills.
Preferred Qualifications and/or Education
- Master’s Degree in education, adult education, or related field.
- Teaching experience, especially K-12.
- Coaching and instructing Adult Education/Adult Learners.
- Experience teaching high school equivalency skills to adult learners preferably GED® preparation.
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk, and sit. The employee may occasionally push or lift items.
Work Schedule
Part-time up to 29 hours/week. Exact hours vary depending on location and need.
- Morning classes Monday-Thursday 8:30 am - noon
- Evening classes Monday-Thursday 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm
