Primarily Technical Education Center (TEC) and Main Campus, but any other college location as assigned by the appropriate administrator.
The part‑time Accelerating Opportunities‑Kansas (AO‑K) Instructor will report to the Assistant Director of Adult Education and teach Adult Basic Education contextualized for selected technical pathway courses as required by the Adult and Family Literacy Act (AEFLA), the Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR), and Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC). The AO‑K instructor will provide team teaching support for students a minimum of 25% of the entire pathway based on credit hours.
POSITIONDESCRIPTION
- Teach basic skills, including writing, math, and reading, in conjunction with TEC curriculum, using a variety of effective teaching strategies to engage and motivate adult learners, addressing diverse learning modalities, abilities, needs and interests through differentiated instruction.
- Use Blackboard to provide course/supplemental materials and communicate with students using course announcements, discussion boards and/or collaborative sessions.
- Plan day‑to‑day instructional activities in collaboration with content instructors.
- Perform effectively in the learning environment by being prepared, maintaining discipline, and engaging students in the learning process.
- Engage in team teaching with TEC content instructor.
- Advise with students during enrollment week and at a minimum every three weeks thereafter regarding test scores, goals, roadblocks, study resources, academic progress, and other topics specific to individual students.
- Adapt instruction based on summative & formative assessments to thoroughly prepare students to take the GED exam/TABE.
- Prepare students to meet program goals (educational attainment, secure employment, retain/improve employment, transition to post‑secondary, college readiness, citizenship skills, and other goals set forth by the program or the Kansas Board of Regents).
- Evaluate and monitor all students’ progress using a variety of formative assessment tools (such as classroom observations, lesson closure discussion, portfolios, and quizzes) and adjust instruction, as necessary.
- Maintain all necessary records for state and federal reports.
- Administer TABE assessments to students as necessary or as set forth by KBOR PAM (Proficiency Attainment Model). Assist with AO‑K orientations.
- Understand the use of all required enrollment paperwork as well as other program documents and forms necessary to maintain accurate records.
- Engage in staff development activities with other adult education staff during the academic year to enhance quality of instruction; earning the required number of PD credits set by KBOR.
- Collaborate with other instructors and Assistant Director/Director about student attendance, behavior, and progress.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director/Director.

- High energy, self‑starter who can work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to develop and maintain excellent working relationships and establish credibility with all levels of employees in the organization.
- Detail oriented.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 applications, especially Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Ability to manage several projects with multiple deadlines simultaneously.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in social services, education, or a related field.
- Interest and/or experience in supporting learners in an alternative setting.
- Master’s degree in education, or related field.
- At least one year teaching experience, especially grades 9‑12.
