Summary

The Senior Academic Tutor provides tutoring in various disciplines based on teaching experience and subject area expertise, including writing, math, science, and other academic areas as needed. This role is part of the Learning Commons, working primarily in either the Writing Center or Math & Science Center. This is a POOL position, with applications accepted on an ongoing basis to meet the increasing demand for academic support across various disciplines.

Position

Description
  • Provide walk-in tutoring and support for students across various subject areas.
  • Assess the needs of students on a walk-in basis and collaborate with team members to ensure comprehensive service.
  • Maintain knowledge of college resources for appropriate student referrals for additional support.
  • Provide one-on-one assistance to students requiring more intensive tutoring.
  • Assist with assessments, including required forms and ensuring accurate student log-in/log-out procedures.
  • Contribute to programming efforts for special events and workshops.
  • Develop, maintain, and contribute to supplementary materials to support student learning.
  • Participate in tutor training, team meetings, and other professional development activities.
  • Exhibit a willingness to assist students with various needs and abilities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
  • Strong ability to assess students' academic needs and design effective tutoring plans.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively to support student learning, including providing support via video conferencing platforms (e.g., Zoom, Teams).
  • Student-centered mindset with the ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced, and sometimes ambiguous environment.
  • Working knowledge of MLA and APA citation styles, including proper formatting for in-text citations and reference lists.
  • Strong understanding of key mathematical concepts and problem-solving techniques, with the ability to clearly explain topics across various levels (e.g., algebra, calculus, statistics, etc.).
  • Comfort with creative problem-solving and adapting teaching methods as needed.
  • Professional demeanor in interactions with students and colleagues.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals, including students, faculty, and staff, while embracing the philosophy and mission of an urban, open-access community college.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in a relevant academic field (e.g., Creative Writing, Education, English, ESOL/ESL, Math, Science, etc.)
  • Prior teaching or tutoring experience in a relevant academic field (e.g., Creative Writing, Education, English, ESOL/ESL, Math, Science, etc.)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree or higher in a relevant academic field.
  • One to three (1-3) years of experience in teaching, tutoring, or providing academic support services.

Work Schedule

This position requires up to 29 hours per week during the academic semester. Hours may include mornings, late afternoons, and evenings depending on scheduling needs. Employees will be required to follow any other job-related instructions and to perform any other job-related duties requested by their supervisor. This job description may be revised upon development of other duties and changes in responsibilities.
