Position OverviewWe are adding Mid to senior level Fire Protection Design Engineers to our Industrial Engineering team. Kiewit is one of North America’s largest and most respected engineering and construction organizations, with a combined staff of more than 3,600 engineers and design professionals. Our construction‑driven engineering focuses on constructability and safety in the earliest phases of projects to ensure on‑time and on‑budget delivery.
The Fire & Life Safety (FLS) Engineering Department supports Kiewit’s power generation, infrastructure, industrial and water work across all of North America. FLS engineers work on projects from estimate through award, creating bid documents, selecting subcontractors, reviewing submittals, and managing project close‑out. During design and procurement they collaborate with Kiewit construction personnel to ensure constructability, schedule, and costs. During construction they manage and track the performance of the fire protection subcontractors and serve as the responsible engineer assigned to the contract.

Kiewit Industrial & Water Engineering is a full‑service consulting and engineering firm serving the infrastructure and engineering markets. With more than 1,700 engineers and design professionals, we cover transportation, power, water/wastewater, mining, building, and oil, gas & chemical markets. Our Industrial Design Group includes process, electrical, controls, structural, architectural, geotechnical, and civil disciplines, delivering EPC and design‑build projects in data centers, mining, industrial and municipal water/wastewater, and campus energy.
The fire protection group provides direct support for Kiewit’s infrastructure and power generation engineering and construction teams, exposing engineers to a variety of project types and challenges.
This position is based out of our Lenexa, Kansas or Lone Tree, Colorado office. Consideration may be made for individuals located near other Kiewit offices in the U.S. Relocation to our district office in Lenexa, Kansas is offered.
Responsibilities- Provide fire protection and life safety design, analysis, and construction support for industrial facilities.
- Perform fire hazard analysis for the site to determine hazards and appropriate active and passive fire protection schemes in conjunction with applicable codes, standards, and contract requirements.
- Generate calculations to size water supply, fire pumps, and underground pipe sizing.
- Develop subcontractor scope of work packages based on the fire hazard analysis and calculations.
- Award and manage subcontractors based on the scope of work packages.
- Review subcontractor fire suppression and fire alarm system plans and calculations.
- Review fire barrier and penetration seal requirements for specific hazards.
- Perform life safety reviews for buildings and industrial equipment areas.
- Travel is required (approximately 10% of the time) to meet with clients and/or job site personnel as needed.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering or related engineering field. EIT preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in fire protection and life safety design/analysis and construction support for industrial, power or similar type facilities. Candidates with more experience are encouraged to apply and will be evaluated accordingly.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to convey concepts and requirements to team members and clients in a professional manner.
- High level of self‑discipline, motivation, ability to operate in a team environment, and willingness to get the job done right the first time.
- Proficiency with NFPA codes and standards 13, 14, 20, 22, 24, 72, 101.
- Proficiency with the International Building Code and International Fire Code.
- Familiarity with NFPA 850 and NFPA 2001 preferred.
